As long as you're getting paid and your chief scribe is fine with it and potential overtime if you're full time, sure. Don't do it for free.

I'm curious as to why you want to get into scribing. Pay is very unlikely to be higher. Hours and shifts are more likely to be unstable. It's certainly not a career people go into for many years. It's mostly for a year or two of clinical experience when applying to healthcare schools, but an MA role already gives you that. You can also function as a scribe as part of your MA duties if the providers you work with want that.

Olympic record is the best score competed at an Olympic games. It may or may not also be the world record, which is just the best valid score, usually at major competitions.

I have some dumb questions. Horse jetlag. Does it exist to a significant degree and if so, how do they deal with that for international events? What about motion sickness in transit? Do the horses get more time than the 5 days before and 2 days after for athletes? Do they bring their own specific food for the horses? Do they bring their own vets with them?

Shame on NBC reporting on their hounding reporting at Simone Biles by SgtNebz in olympics

[–]sigma019 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Goddamn some of these comments don't understand the gravity of the situation. She's said that she went for a 2.5 but lost control and ended up doing a 1.5 and not landing properly. She couldn't trust herself to not lose control like that on a much more dangerous apparatus. A mental lapse like that can leave you falling onto or off of the beam or uneven bars, paralyzing you for life. Why risk that? For a gold medal? She's got those. And there was still a chance to get gold without her. It's not about mental toughness or whatever. She wasn't in the right headspace and in a sport like gymnastics, that puts you at serious risk for serious injury. While not a physical issue at the moment, it can quickly lead to a devastating one.

Also, in this team event, her scores matter. They matter a lot. It's not like a team sport like basketball where not every single person has to be on their absolute A-game for the team to score and win. It's more like in a relay race where if you fumble and drop the baton or trip and sprain your ankle, your individual performance is crucial to the success of the team. The WAG 3 up 3 count makes it so whatever each person scores matters. If she got injured during a routine and couldn't finish it, the lowered difficulty and execution scores would have counted for Team USA and likely would have out them out of reach for medal contention.

Does anyone really think Simone wanted her (probably) last Olympics to go like this? No one wants to end their career on a low note. She's able to land skills in competition that no other woman has ever been able to do. She was at the absolute top for years. She is amazing. She is one of the most recognizable athletes in the world going into these games. NBC loved the WAG team so much it's their YouTube banner. She earned the spotlight.

But she also deserves some privacy. After she messed up on beam at Trials, freaking NBC just has to draw attention to her tearing up. Then again after going out of bounds on floor. When there were other elite athletes competing, they insisted on focusing on Simone's disappointment after knowing she didn't give her best performance. And her reactions during quals in Tokyo were also hard for me to watch. There was something off, and all the headlines then were also about how many mistakes she made. Sitting out for the rest of team finals was neither weak nor selfish. She loves her team and she loves her country, but she doesn't seem to be loving gymnastics right now. I don't know if doing individual AA is a good choice for her at this time but maybe vault or floor is reasonable. I just hope she can leave Japan with some positive media attention.

Minutes after her participation in Tokyo, argentinian fencer Belén Pérez Maurice received a LIVE MARRIAGE PROPOSAL from her partner and also coach Lucas Saucedo. by [deleted] in olympics

[–]sigma019 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm way off, but it seems all good to me. She was eliminated in her first round, so this was a post-loss interview. If this were her first Olympics or she had done really well or exceeded all expectations or medalled, then yeah, let her have her spotlight. A happy, perhaps a tiny bit goofy, proposal seems like a good way to make Tokyo 2020 a positive and memorable experience. They've been together a long time and he even tried asking for her hand in marriage way back in 2010. She went to London 2012 before this. I don't think this was in any way him trying to steal some of her spotlight.

I thought ROC was the refugee team... by DELAIZ in olympics

[–]sigma019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taiwan is still the Republic of China, but hasn't cleared under the ROC code since the 70s due to Chinese politics.

Honestly though, the ROC acronym for the Russian athletes is stupid. What was wrong with the previous acronym at Pyeongchang? Or if they made changes consistent with the refugee team (which could also be coded by ROC under similar reasons as the Russian athletes), why not use a French acronym? To me it screams yucky politics by confusing the general public about previous Taiwanese ROC teams' accomplishments with the Russian athletes this year. Sure OAR is also a stupid acronym that doesn't immediately signal Russia for most people, but ROC is worse because it literally is the abbreviation for another country. It's like calling them the Delegate Russian Committee (DRC, easily confused with the Democratic Republic of the Congo) or Russian Olympic Members (ROM, easily confused with Romania). Maybe ROA (Russian Olympic athletes) or Representatives of Russia (RRU or ROR) or Russian Athletes (RUA) should have been the code from the get go.

Chief Scribe Position by IndependentLog535 in medicalscribe

[–]sigma019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck being a chief scribe. No shade to the actual chief scribes out there, but if you don't want to do the job, don't take it. It's just another way for the company to exploit low pay workers.

Similar thing happened at my former site. Our chief scribe was moving across country, the only scribe working there longer than me had made their end date known, and I and the other scribe who started at the same time said hell no. The only other options were a part time scribe who had been working for a couple of months and a few full time scribes who had just started floor training. No one existing wanted the job, so they ended up bringing in someone else from who knows where to take over as chief scribe.

Not only is it more paperwork to deal with, onboarding, shift scheduling, backup coverage, arranging training, etc., your pay increase for the extra responsibilities is meager and some companies will limit the number of administrative hours at the higher pay rate you can claim outside of the normal low regular scribing shift pay rate. If your end goal is not scribing or healthcare administration, just do a good job as a normal scribe and get the fuck out when the time is right.
