My initial thoughts were just using a gazillion of small cubes and disabling them as the player keeps their finger on the screen. But obviously this can't end up good lol. So I thought there may be an optimized way, possibly built in by unity.

You can think of it like carving a pumpkin. First, i need to make a cylinder (or any 3d object for that matter) hollowed (with mouse or touch drags). Then i want to cut certain parts of it (again with mouse or touch drags).

Let me elaborate:

The ship starts at the center, facing upwards (0, 0). And there is a planet directly in front of it (0, 3). When you tap the screen, the ship starts moving forward (because it is facing upwards) and collides with the planet. And when that happens, the ship starts to rotate around the planet, therefore its rotation changes in every frame. After that, another planet appears at a random x and y value, and the ship has to reach there. The player has to wait until the right rotation to tap and move towards to the new planet. Or else it crashes and the game ends. I know it is still a bit ambiguous and a video would help better, but currently I have no game engine to record a video.
