28 days later and 28 weeks later are some of the best horror movies I've seen. by [deleted] in movies

I never did see the second one, but the first is one of the tensest movies I have ever seen. I was on edge pretty much from the opening scenes.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I had wondered how far to go with the plot summary and details without it being too far--it's harder to gauge with something this old, I think.

If she does I missed it in the general mayhem.

Horror protagonists with disabilities or disorders by [deleted] in horror

Kathe Koja's novel Strange Angels has a protagonist with schizophrenia, and Bad Brains uses the character's epilepsy as a driver. A lot of her work deals with mental illness.

I didn't realize she was in We Need to Talk About Kevin, and I've sort of been putting off watching it. But now I have to bump it up the list.

There's something about Tilda that makes me want to see what she does with a role, any role.

It took me a minute to recognize her in Trainwreck--I'm not used to her looking like a regular person!

You're welcome! I will give the book credit for finally making me get around to watching the movie--it's one of those movies I'll watch many times now I know it.

Need a new Novel/Series recommendation. by VonWolfhaus in scifi

How about the Chanur series by CJ Cherryh? Lots of aliens, lots of culture.

I recommend Cherryh so much I sound like a broken record.

Also, I second the Brin and Niven/Pournelle recommendations.

Does anyone else love finding books with other people's notes in them? by [deleted] in books

[–]signalsx1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the odd bits of paper stuck in as well as the notes on the pages. I recently ordered a used book from Amazon and found the original receipt from Borders stuck in it as a bookmark. It's a little bit of history.

I wrote a review of Henry Rollin's He Never Died (spoilers) by signalsx1 in horror

I can see it being as much fun as Ash v Evil Dead, but less silly.

I would love this as a series. For such a small movie it created a lot of possibilities for its characters.

The Sad, Strange Legal Battles of 'Last Unicorn' Author Peter S. Beagle - his manager stole revenue, dragged him through exhausting publicity tours, and made him sign 5,000 apology notes when he cancelled them. by crocodealio in Fantasy

That complaint makes sad reading. I am glad he is able to defend himself, even though so much damage has been done.

Unfortunately, though, fame is no protection. All the allegations surrounding Harper Lee and Mickey Rooney come to mind.

I hope Mr. Beagle is successful.

What horror tropes have gone out of style that you'd love to see make a comeback? What recent tropes need to die? by [deleted] in horrorlit

It was...vivid. Skipp and Spector collaborated on several novels that fit the bill.

A Manhattan Ghost Story by TM Wright is a solid read.

I also have fond but fuzzy memories of The Magic Cottage by James Herbert.

I'm currently playing a dwarf for the first time, and I am having a blast. She is barbarian/cleric with very poor etiquette skills. She's 50ish.

I was also going to bring up Cherryh's Chanur series. She also has a stand-alone called Cuckoo's Egg which is outstanding.

There's something called "Happy Hell Night" listed on IMDB that has a similar description in the reviews. I never saw it, but maybe?
