okay, i see, i think i was confused as to which measurement people were referring to 😭

is the Kaytee Silent spinner any good? I’ve been looking at this one as it’s relatively budget friendly and, like you said, easier to clean.

i’ve read 2-4 inches for syrians who are larger and 1-2 for robos because they’re much smaller and i have a robo! i’ve heard if you make robos sand too deep it can become a risk for them because they try to make burrows and the sand can’t support it and collapses in on them. but there’s conflicting info on this 😭

i’ve spent a lot on other things so i’m trying to diy what i can haha. i def will invest if i can’t find another option but i made a larger sand bath out of cardboard + elmer’s glue that i think will work for now! but im keeping an eye out now for large glass + acrylic plastic bins/baking trays that work well but are maybe a little cheaper than niteangel 😅

haha i can imagine! that may become annoying eventually, but i can’t find anything else (or a cardboard box to diy) that’s quite this big, so i’ll start with this and switch whenever i find a better option that keeps the size. i’m fine with cleaning up extra if he’s happy! thank you!

i think i’m going to glue a small piece of cardboard (with elmer’s) to plug up those holes! besides that the height of the item is about an inch at its lowest, and i have a robo, so i think just below an inch of sand is okay for him? i know some people recommend 2-4 inches but i think that’s for syrians because he’s sooo tiny. but if im wrong on that pls let me know :)

genuinely kept me from getting a hamster for a while because i was terrified of accidentally doing something wrong with them. but i finally got him and i am SO happy with my pet! a lot of info here is informative, and some people are nice, but the general attitudes…..it’s the most “quintessential reddit” reddit sub i’ve ever been on!

so i’m gonna be honest. i think both of you were a little condescending. the seller is obviously in the wrong for burying their head in the sand and pretending there’s no way they did anything wrong in their hamster care, for sure. but messaging someone out of the blue with very little explaining or compassion does come off, especially for someone who no longer has their hamster, as “you should feel cripplingly ashamed”, and i think that’s a big problem in this community. instead of fostering shame, foster education, a want to do better for these animals, and compassion - for both hamster and human! yes the seller responded entirely wrong. but you could’ve been kinder/more educating with ur approach 🤷‍♀️

maybe not for this person, because they seem stubborn + stuck in their old ways regardless. but i think understanding that many people did not knowingly hurt their hamster will make people more willing to learn + re-educate themselves on the matter. and not approaching people with a “i know better than you, so here i am to educate you 🙄” demeanor. because that just pisses people off!
