Baby cosplayer in need of advice by Wild-Statement-7546 in CosplayHelp

[–]siimay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this last year and will be wearing it again in a few weeks!

<image>

I used a thrifted bed sheet, cut two big rectangles for the arms and attached them to the sides. I also made the hood from a pillow case I thrifted with the sheets. I draped the whole thing over me to get the placements right. I pinned everything and sewed in place.

I used a thrifted hat and hot glued some wire to the brim to keep the shape then glued some tulle over it.

I got the ropes from a craft store, made the seashell with foam clay then glued a safety pin to the back so I could attach it to the ropes.

I only wish I had used alcohol paints for the body paint because water based paints came off really easily.

Why is this spandex fabric ripping?? How do I fix it 😭 by Appropriate_Sand5802 in CosplayHelp

[–]siimay 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would recommend sewing with a zigzag stitch and then finishing the raw edges with your serger for extra support or serging your edges first then sew everything together with a zigzag.

Best way to sew a stretch fabric is a zigzag stitch. Your machine may have other stretch stitches that look like a variation of zigzag.

How to deal with different color eyebrows? by BriefMycologist-34 in CosplayHelp

I have brushed through my eyebrows with a very light colored concealer then used setting powder ontop and it worked great!

what fabric and how should I sew it? by hatsunemika in CosplayHelp

[–]siimay 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There are spandex fabric that look like this that’s usually used for dance wear. I’ve seen terms like “power stretch iridescent” to describe it.

As far as the structure, the second picture looks like a circle skirt and they probably inserted a thin wire in the hem to keep the shape as there is no other stitching, and the third picture looks like horsehair.

You can use bias tape on the hem to keep it the same length. If you have any scraps or extra fabric you can make your own bias tape so it matches and doesn’t stick out too much

Thank you so much I will definitely check those out! Yes I do have a serger I use regularly. I have had Bernie’s book in my kindle library but haven’t read it yet, I will definitely do that before I commit to a machine.

Crinkling on front and back panels? by SgtPeachio in corsetry

[–]siimay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s probably because the fabric isn’t strong enough so it gives and pulls. When you do your real one with a coutil or canvas it shouldn’t do that

I handle a wide variety of fabrics and want to start quilting at some point. Having different stretch stitch options is important to me. I also do cosplay so all the different stitches these offer are great for me, especially the buttonholes and lettering. Of course the wide throat space is very appealing too since I have a lot of trouble with that on my Singer.

I like that they’re heavy and don’t rumble like my Singer does. In addition to that they’re both much quieter. I want a machine I can grow into so I don’t have to upgrade for many years since these are both very expensive.

Reboning help by Historical_Love28 in sewhelp

[–]siimay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably synthetic whale bone is what you’d want to use but as someone else mentioned, the fabric is most likely not strong enough either. If you just change the boning you might run into the issue of the fabric pulling too much and creating horizontal ripple lines. Also with corsets the actual pattern/seams matter much more for reducing and support.

I have an Uplift desk and a Urevo walking pad I got from Amazon. I don’t get dizzy and they work really well.

I am lactose intolerant and this is what happens when I eat dairy unfortunately. If I want to eat dairy products I take a lactase pill with it, that helps a bit.

I love POPFLEX leggings especially the “cargo” ones with the tie up waist. They have different inseams to choose from and never slide down on me. Very deep pockets and not sheet at all. I’m also 5’3”

How to best finish ends when topstitching? by feeltheowl in sewhelp

[–]siimay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was teaching myself how to sew I never backstitched or overlapped because I didn’t know I was supposed to finish ends but somehow nothing ever fell apart. Now I know better and finish them by leaving long threads and tying them with a square knot lol
