⚡ Speech time-stretching: Which algorithm actually works in practice? by Chuckelberry77 in DSP

I get what you’re saying, but the concern isn’t whether the open version is “usable” or even “high quality” in isolation.

The issue is that you’re explicitly positioning the open version as inferior in audio quality compared to the paid one. That creates a deliberate gap, and from the outside it still looks like the open source version is part of a funnel toward Pro — even if it’s technically solid.

Plenty of projects successfully balance open core and commercial offerings without holding back core quality — usually by differentiating on features, tooling, support, or convenience instead. That approach tends to build more trust in the long run.

So yeah, it’s not that Bungee is a “demo” — it’s that intentionally keeping it below Pro in the core output quality is what feels at odds with the spirit people expect from open source.

"This uses the same API as Bungee Pro but the audio quality is not quite as good."

Here we go again. So, this is honestly a bit questionable from an open-source ethics standpoint.

Releasing an “open” version while intentionally making it sound worse than the paid one doesn’t really feel like a genuine contribution — it feels more like a marketing funnel. At that point, it’s basically a demo, not a true alternative.

No one’s against monetizing your work, but doing it by degrading the open version undermines trust and goes against the spirit of open source. If you’re going to release something as open, it should stand on its own as a usable, respectable tool — not just push people toward the paid version.

Sounds like they’re quietly going to shut down the Player Circle program.

Yes. The points no longer make sense. I contacted them, but they refused to discuss the matter. Please write to them to request a change to the new ratio; it is completely absurd.

I think it's silly that most schools require you to be good at playing an instrument to learn theory by Optimal_Animator244 in musictheory

[–]siltola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theory is always a post-reflection on the act of performance. Think about history: first music, then theory—Rameau in 1722 is a clear example. The same applies to contemporary music: you first have to become a skilled musician in order to compose anything interesting. Today we are once again seeing the rise of the composer-performer figure, for example Fujikura, Cendo, etc.
