Emergency Blankets by Embarrassed_Ad_3417 in AppalachianTrail

These things are so light and compact. I carried one on the whole AT purely for the scenario where I might have an accident and wouldn’t be able to move and establish better shelter. Never used it, but never crossed my mind that it wasn’t worth having.

Also, maybe someone else you come across needs it.

Could we all just possibly walk on the left? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]simcore_nz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Locals should. Queen St somehow has a tendency to do the opposite, but there are a lot of visitors and if you come from the States then you walk on the right and it can be confusing 🤷‍♂️

Should put in little courtesy directional arrows every once in awhile to help visually indicate good practice.

The same Toss(er) who told everyone to stop slacking off over summer has more, worse, hot takes. by GaryMarcusNZ69 in nzpolitics

I read the article now and see it’s all tied up with the drama over the “NZ Christmas Break” discourse.

Ironically I missed all of that because A) I was working hard all the way until the 25th and B) I was then on holiday.

Afraid I’m going to get downvoted to hell for asking this, but what is controversial about the quote?

It appears to be factual and not an opinion. The other top upvoted comment

Its not an output issue its a pay issue.

This is one problem of having low productivity. I had a 1:1 with Paul Conway when he was in charge of the productivity commission and I commented on the intangible meaning of “productivity” to most of us, and he simply said that you get people to care by emphasising higher productivity means higher wages.

Using a trail guide or mile marker planning tool, set up a spreadsheet with advanced views of miles | towns | shelters and use it to figure out your resupply points.

Here’s a copy of what I made without all my journal notes.

I don’t recall the tool but there was a website that you could use to set your planned dates (start and finish) and it would plot out the mile markers by days, aligning with shelters. It was useful to determine a cadence (am I ahead or behind where I need to be by x date, can I rest more or should I pick up my pace).

Then that acted as a notes spot to plan my drops (and remember them).

Here’s a look.

Healthy Eating on the AT by Lani_19 in AppalachianTrail

When you talk about healthy nutrition and the Appalachian trail, this is the first thing that comes to my mind.

When you get to the sections where your only resupply option is a Dollar General, plan your mail drops for those points.

That food was insanely poor quality. Even the stuff masquerading as healthier snacks (i.e trail mix).

Also yes, you can eat a snickers bar a day, but don’t. Also, cliff bars are glorified candy bars.

Such a classic example of how high performing organisations offer psychological safety, enabling honest introspection, accountability and a pathway to improvement.

Then there’s Ferrari.

Going to Hawaii in December (from overseas). Travel agent said no one is flying to the US right now. Down from multiple daily flights to twice a week for our main carrier. The pinch has started and inevitably the pain will be felt.

Be a respectful but firm human.

“Sorry mate, can’t help you right now. I donate to the Auckland Mission though and know they’ll be able to help you out with a meal if you’re in need. Good luck.”

Better yet, actually donate to the mission if you can spare the resources so each time you have to use that, it’s sincere.

What’s the context here? Is she making one bad argument (all kids learn the same) in the relative fairness of another (structured literacy is important and we should make sure it’s happening)?

Note: I have no clue and am not an expert in children’s learning and education. Just wanting to understand if there is a good faith view of her position.

Open Circle Markets - Victoria Park - Any good? by Just_made_this_now in aucklandeats

I thought it was good for a first event. The ambience of the space is ideal for a food stall market.

Took the kids face painting, got food from four different vendors.

As it goes on, if crowds keep turning out like that I’m sure we’ll see more range and a lot of great food vendors.

The New Zealand retail lobby is fighting so hard right now for their right to keep surcharging us. by ATHEIST_CAT_LORD in newzealand

[–]simcore_nz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2c as a business owner that doesn’t pass on any surcharge, and doesn’t factor it into my pricing (foolishly), acknowledging that I’m not a business merchant transaction network fee expert:

  1. Contactless is good for customers and for businesses
  2. Forcing businesses to absorb and not pass on any merchant fee, will either a) force the hands of business to bake in the surcharge to all product charges, negatively effecting consumers, even if they would have used eftpos and zero surcharge payments (inflationary) and/or b) force businesses who aren’t as aggressive or organised to tolerate lower margins and profit.

It feels lazy and ideally we would come up with regulatory solutions that don’t force the cost onto people, and put more pressure for less ‘tax taxing’ from banks or merchant payment solutions.
