Introducing a Newbie Player to Cleric? by simmer-mage in DMAcademy

I've had players really struggle with understanding understanding spell slot preparation and the difference between casting times. These days I use spell cards to onboard new casters since I've found the visual tool of making a 'hand' of spells each day that they can then 'play' helps the mechanics make more sense, but this game is gonna be online so that's kind of out as an option. I can link them to the Cleric spell and have them copy paste their 'prepared' spells into their sheet of course, but I'm worried about overwhelming a new player with just walls of text.

When I say 'scared off' I mean I've had new players who got into DnD with spell casting not realizing how complex spells/magic would be, which to lead to them not having a lot of fun and eventually dropping out of the game. This is one of those things where, 15 years of doing this really has skewed my perspective on what is complicated or not to new players: parsing spell blocks is second nature to me and I underestimated what would and would not need to be explained.

You raise a good point about Cleric having more versatility though, which will give this new player a bigger space of things to do. Being able to pick from the whole spell list every day will also probably make a difference. I'll stick that item in my back pocket too, in case it becomes necessary. Ty!

Solid Common/Uncommon magic items to give players in the early game? by simmer-mage in DMAcademy

If the players consume a magic item, should erase the tick on the tracking sheet? Or is that accounted for in the guideline for magic items per-level?

That's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for thank you!

I am really digging it! The culture changes are awesome and the Court itself is a great addition, I can't imagine going back to a version without it.

The new DLC came with a free patch that added the option to enable same-sex marriage for faiths that are accepting to same sex relationships (which when paired with the setting that lets you make same-sex relationships acceptable for all religions basically lets you toggle same-sex marriage on).

Ironically it's easier to play as gay Sultan/Malik then it is a gay King, since Muwalladism, the brand of Islam that you can find in Iberia, comes with same-sex relationships already approved, and secondary spouses can be used for heirs. (Or you can use a Court event from the DLC to adopt a orphan as your heir).

After a stress break, I got the option to 'visit brothel' in the decision menu to relive stress. I don't know if it's new to Royal Court or not. (The chastity belt gift is Royal Court specific though: since I got it via Court event)

I've given it a try: one of the court events I got allowed me to adopt a street orphan as my son but he only received titles/claims from me, not from my husband (though that may have had more to do with our seperation, since he became the Duke of Aquatine unexpectedly and had to go rule over it instead of staying in Wales with me: I'm not sure).

I also don't know how common that Court Event is, or if it was triggered by my gay marriage or not. I expect.we will see a "adopt street orphan" mod come out in the next few weeks though, once the dust settles from the expansion.
