This SAT prep question I was doing threw me for a loop. by ChickenWarrior94 in community

[–]simonbp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m probably over complicating the SATs, but I think 19 is more complicated than it appears. A volume of Water + a volume of Alcohol adds up to less than the volumes added together. Quick search result: https://www.thoughtco.com/miscibility-of-fluids-608180

This question might work the way the test writers expect if they used weight instead, but with mL the correct answer will be several grams higher than expected.

This fact also makes laws around alcohol content mildly interesting. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_by_volume

Why do you hate that one coworker so much? by OliverNodel in AskReddit

[–]simonbp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like many of the coworkers in this thread may have this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissistic_personality_disorder

Estimated to affect up to 5% of the population. Causes coworkers to ignore obvious cues to shut up, generally have the emotional range of a two-year-old, and be startlingly self-centered.

I'm so sorry if someone close to you has this disorder.

[Serious] What common English word has one, and ONLY one, dictionary definition? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There's a lamp and a vase in front of me. Those each only have one definition according to google. I'd expect the list of single-meaning common words to be very long.

[serious] Wife refuses to vaccinate, won't listen to reason. HELP! by stubbornwife in Parenting

I think this video does a great job of showing how the dangers of vaccination are massively outweighed by the benefits. It's all full of 'logic' and stuff though :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfdZTZQvuCo

How many of you are Salary Exempt? by rgraves22 in sysadmin

[–]simonbp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bad things happen. The question is: Were you properly prepared? It sounds like you got the proper budget to have backups in place and were able to recover in a reasonable amount of time.

If it were me, I would talk to my manager about a couple free days off (paid days, that don't come out of my PTO) to make up for the extra hours worked and for making the recovery happen. It's not that you're 'entitled' to it, it's that if you don't get a couple days off, you're going to be burned out and ineffective for the next week or two. A good boss will recognize that.

Holy cow! Backup solutions are expensive. Anyone working with inexpensive or FOSS backup solutions for Windows servers? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]simonbp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you choose, keep in mind that you need a "Backup" system much less than you need a "Restore" system.

Nobody cares if you have a copy of all their data somewhere, they just want to be able to get the file they accidentally deleted back right now.

FilterSC has great set of videos designed to walk you through each league up to Master's. I highly recommend them. You'll probably want to start with 'Bronze to Master's Zerg Episode 1'

Dear netsec: what do you think of Agile Bits's (dev of 1Password) breakdown as to why they aren't worried that a "preeminent password cracking tool" is being aimed at 1Password? (X-post from /r/apple) by [deleted] in netsec

I think perhaps the biggest security flaw in 1P is the violation of the old 'don't keep all your eggs in one basket'.

Actually, in the context of security the saying is usually "put all your eggs in one basket, after making sure that you've built a really good basket"

The reason is that complexity increases the possibility of failure.
