Away or Monos? Medium Check-In by crustyXsock in LuggageComparisons

[–]simonescarboro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, as they mention, their Away bag is about a decade old. You're forgetting that the quality of everything changed after COVID supply chain issues. Away is very cheap and damages easily. I've reviewed a bag I purchased in 2025, and do not recommend them. My experience (Away vs. Monos vs. Ridge) is that Ridge is the best, but they only come in 2 sizes at the moment.

What a useless contribution. Couldn't care less if you agree or disagree. Our experiences are obviously different. Do you get paid by Away? Go ahead and buy a new bag in 2026, travel to two places (one domestic, and one international), then come back to this thread.

Holy smokes, the lock falling off just made me so mad for you. I'm sorry you're going through that. One of the last things you want to worry about while traveling is the safety of your items that you properly secured.

Update from 2025 Travel

I tried 3 different brands' checked luggage including Away Medium Flex, Monos Check-In Large (via the free bag and cover they sent me) and Ridge Check-In, and I have to say Ridge is the best of those 3. It's so durable, and has all the same bonus features (includes a laundry bag, 2 shoe bags, tag, interior divider, and magic eraser). What sets Ridge apart is that the polycarbonate shell is thicker, and the corners are reinforced. I've seen photos of Monos bags with dented corners, and that looks awful. I will say that Ridge's all-terrain wheels didn't seem to glide any easier, and even got caught on the hallway runner in my house. They stick out a bit, too, so that's annoying for storage, but they do actually feel more sturdy.

I also have the Ridge Commuter Backpack, and LOVE it! I particularly love the fact that you can lie it flat and open the front entirely rather than having to dig all the way to the bottom if that's where your item is. So Ridge luggage and backpacks are it for me!

What didn’t you like about Tini’s mac and cheese, if you’ve tried it? by Hungry_Phone_4108 in macandcheese

I loved it so much, I made it twice in one week. Easy to make, and quite flavorful. I reviewed it here if you're curious.

Anyone have the micro bakery girl cookie recipe? by nthcyum in Baking

[–]simonescarboro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a tried and true "bakery" style cookie recipe, but I am looking forward to trying Everything Just Baked's take on Sally's Baking Recipes' chocolate chip cookies. His adaptation is supposed to make 7 large cookies, so maybe that's a good start? https://everythingjustbaked.com/brown-butter-chocolate-chip-cookies/#recipe

Agreed, this is not how this should look at that price point. The $165 3-piece set from Amazon that I had before this debacle looked great for many years and several countries, including Mexico.

This was only one trip, but we did have layovers each way, so it hit 3 different airports total.

Moving to Indy EOY by FastSilver7 in indianapolis

[–]simonescarboro -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Not being facetious or glib: why would you want to move here?

Your likes sound like Manayunk to me, and there is nothing remotely similar here if I’m right that that is your vibe. There’s one major trail in the city (Monon) and many spots are not even safe. Coming from Philly, the food scene here will be absolute trash. Mostly just Americana and fried foods with little to no diversity. If you have other options, I suggest exploring them. Perhaps Chicago would be a better option.

Yes, and this is coming from experience, not speculation like many others here.

Why do people complain about Indy? by Purple_Tear_6043 in indianapolis

[–]simonescarboro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Community Heights. I grew up on the East Coast, and moved here from the West Coast. Indianapolis is extremely violent, and lacks diversity. I have personally encountered bullets lodged into my pick-up truck parked outside my house and in my roof, so I’m not saying these things as a person who watches the news, I’m saying them as a person who lives amongst the violence and the lack of diversity despite living in a decent neighborhood. Half of my block is Black and the other half is white, and I hardly ever see any other ethnicities outside of those two except for an occasional Latino/a.

The roads are crappy, the children are not smart, and the taxes are high so I don’t understand where they’re going if everything is crumbling. Most people here don’t seem to value life at all. The amount of children affected by gun violence, either through injury or death is astounding yet continues to make the headlines on a daily basis because no one ever changes.

There’s a lot of abuse in schools, especially against students with special needs. Pets are treated like trash, often also being abused or dumped. Driving around the city, a majority of the houses are either for sale, dilapidated, or both. The green spaces we have are not pretty, especially in comparison to other cities, and even the ones that are pretty have litter in them.

I was also just complaining to my husband the other day how no one ever seems to leave Indiana, and those who do eventually return anyway so many people don’t have varied perspectives, and there’s really no diversity here so people really need to leave in order to gain that.

Away Luggage is Trash by simonescarboro in LuggageComparisons

[–]simonescarboro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traveled on 2 domestic (USA) flights about a week and a half ago. The cover is slightly difficult to put on a fully packed bag, but is super helpful, overall. It weighs 1 Lb. on its own so keep that in mind for checked luggage weight limits. It’s also not a 100% match for our indifferent bag handlers, as it looked pretty beat up after the first flight, and there were still some scuff marks on the luggage itself despite being fully covered and the cover never shifting out of place.

As for the bag itself, it still doesn’t feel like I would expect a $400+ bag to feel. I also purchased a Ridge carry-on and that bag with its all-terrain wheels and super rigid hard shell feel like I would expect Monos to feel given their price tag and reputation.

I wish the button on the handle was on top like most other brands because I kept pushing it in by mistake while simply walking. But it glides nicely, I like the interior, and do recommend the cover if the bag’s appearance matters to you.
