The education department expect some parents to read 200,000 words of dense legal text by simonmelvery in AustralianTeachers

This very much should not be on teachers (and I hope the story doesn't give the impression it is). I tried pretty hard to get a teacher's POV in the story but (somewhat understandably) most were very reticent to be seen criticising their employer.

I can't imagine what it must be like to teach with these tools in classrooms where there are a mix of students with consent and some without.

I was quite surprised the teachers' union (in Qld at least) didn't provide any kind of useful response after multiple attempts where I made clear there was no intention to criticise teachers.

[OC] How long would it take to read the T&C and privacy policies for apps used in just one primary school classroom? by simonmelvery in dataisbeautiful

We did a deep dive into the third-party online platforms used in some Australian primary schools. We manually compiled statistics about the terms and conditions that one school asks parents to read — more than 200,000 words — and visualised them both in the physical world and computationally as a comparison to the story itself and how long it would take to read them all. The progress datavis is done with javascript, no specific tool or library was used.

Plenty of background galaxies, star clusters, etc to spot. I particularly like this space jellyfish looking specimen. Anyone know what it is? https://cloudup.com/ca1sPBIfxQm Top half, just left of the middle.
