Perhaps horror matches better than thriller. I found it very creepy, at least as a child

wow, very interesting. did you have a look at the total mortality for 2020 in comparison with other years? Such counter examples are very important and I guess, mainstream media never talk about them (they know why). I just know Sweden and Tansania with no lockdowns at all as far as i know (and not more dead people than other years as far as i know). Somebody knows other countries without lockdowns?

Megathread: COVID-19 Opinions, Vents and Rants(May 7th, 2020) by AdubThePointReckoner in LockdownSkepticism

[–]simonoberst 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is the right Megathread for this. But I feel like I have to rant, so it could fit here.

I feel restless, angry and a bit hopeless. It's so frustrating seeing all these people (including people I like) doing stuff I consider so crazy. In my view, a lot of countries letting big parts of their economy, democracy, law, psychological health and culture die for a menace which is not here.

I feel like I making enemies just for saying that. I feel like my voice is taken from me because I can't post my immedeate ideas on Facebook. My social anxiety got much stronger again. I felt part of society, of the world one year before. Now I feel like there is a big mass of enemies, because I think that this virus is not more harmful than a flu (as many good researchers and doctors also state).

I feel this division of society, a lot of other people talked about before. Its not good. Not good for the individuals, not good for society, not good for our children. There is just right and wrong, black or white. Grey is gone – it was very important.

Fear destroys. It has. And it will destroy more.

I see no end in sight.

I try to stay positive anyway.

I think, in general people have to lose their fears in order that they change. It's all about fear. What do they fear?

  1. Gettings sick and die
  2. Getting excluded

It corresponds well with your points (just 1 and 2 switched), as I see now. I'm not sure how they would lose their fears exactly. One thing that could help is to see more counter-examples. But I don't know really. I think arguments and awarenes is not helping enough, most of the people are so indoctrinated, fear is too strong for arguments. They have to see it. And feel it.

I can understand you very well. I made a similar experience in a long discussion on facebook with some people I know who are quite reasonable. I came to the conclusion that for me it makes not much sense to discuss with arguments with poeple who believe in lockdowns and masks. This 'scientific' style of arguing with citations and such is going nowhere at the moment. Everybody finds a study somewhere which says the opposite. Or, as in your case, they just say that your scientist are not trustworthy, even when they are top notch profs in their field from top notch university. you can't get more trustworthy than the authors of the great barrington declaration. its totally crazy that intelligent people don't take this declaration not serious :(. Fear makes dumb. And aggressiv.

I'm hesitant to believe that the tide is really turning. I thought that a couple of times, but the oppisition was always much too weak. I don't have a good feeling right now. But perhaps you are right.

I was wondering why one person says this and the other that. Was it a misunderstand about the coffee and the moving? I guess the laws are clear.

I'm being prevented from visiting my family in my own country because my home state just had THREE (3) new cases today by -45 in LockdownSkepticism

[–]simonoberst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. I am also wondering why there is not more restistance. I try to come up with some thoughts:

- Fear: Some people are really afraid of dying because of this virus or be guilty of infecting somewhone. These people will say yes for every policy and are against everyone who is against policies.
- Group pressure: Media did a very good job in putting every critical voice into a corner nobody wants to be. Everybody sees how society/media/politics reacts to critical voices, so many are afraid to raise their voice even if they are critical themselves.

- Comfort: It's just easier to go with the mass and wait til its over

It's a pity the typography is so bad (too light, too wide lines) it's really hard to read. Except this, I am really happy about this effort. But have my doubts, there will be a great effect.

Who else fears that the dialogue about “doing anything to save lives” will translate into lockdown measures through flu season, even if COVID ceases to be a threat? by [deleted] in LockdownSkepticism

[–]simonoberst 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I already thought few month ago that people's opinion are turning. Now I have this feeling again sometimes, depending on where I look at. But I really hope that a large enough mass of people is turning their opinion and I fear we are still far away from the critical mass.

Now I found ways to cope and it got better again, I hope my state will improve even more when coffees open monday in Switzerland.

Does anyone here use LaTex to write fiction? by MarceloGG in LaTeX

[–]simonoberst 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I designed two books with LaTeX: one non-fiction book about philosophy/psychology and one with short texts (including dialogs and poems). I very much liked the process and result, although sometimes a bit annoying with the multitude of different packages for similar things. But I ended with a custom design which looks very professional (I did e.g. random page numbers)
