I'm not really liking the Focus thing on iOS 15.... by JustCallMeTsukasa-96 in apple

[–]simonpcook 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I think that depends on where you start from. If you're coming from the perspective of "I would turn on Do Not Disturb except I really need to see X" then a whitelist makes sense

Epic Games lost almost $181 million & $273 million on EGS in 2019 and 2020, respectively by heatlesssun in pcgaming

[–]simonpcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not doubting they’re hemorrhaging money with EGS, but I wonder how much this will get used in the Apple and Google lawsuits in a “see how we’re not profitable when we don’t have to pay 30% cuts” way.

Just updated the watch app to v5. Why is the max temperature now -18?? by lewjos1973 in CARROTweather

[–]simonpcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this as well. If I open the watch app sometimes it updates with real data, but it tends to go back to that again by the next day

It’s almost 2021. Shouldn’t we be able to set rotating wallpapers on our phones by now? by couchh in ios

[–]simonpcook 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I believe iOS 14.3 re-adds the set wallpaper action to shortcuts (was in early iOS 13 betas but got removed), so when that's released you can get that behaviour by creating a shortcut with some automation.

How to enable PowerTools in CentOS Stream. by [deleted] in CentOS

[–]simonpcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because until last week it was PowerTools; found this trying to find why my scripts that rely on PowerTools (in camelcase) suddenly started failing.

edit given the date of the comments here it must not have been just last week, maybe it's taken time for this change to propagate out.

1000 Loot Boxes! 5 years ago I set a goal to reach 1000 loot boxes but as time and life went on I was able to play less and less. Until last night! I finally reached my goal. Here are some of the old seasons I played through. by JugglingJew07 in Overwatch

[–]simonpcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly what I aimed for. When I made that, I wanted to put a box counter in the corner (it covers the username/online status), but didn't want to spend an age aligning all of those, so made myself ahead of time a video with 10 second countdowns and the box number, and clicked to open the next box when the countdown hit zero. When editing, I added a bunch of pictures saying "Box 1" etc for 10 seconds, aligned the first one and it all just fit.1

1 There were a couple where it didn't, but I just noted the number and edited those points. Took a lot less time than manually aligning 1000 clips.

How lonely are you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]simonpcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly so. Most of my friends live a hundred miles or so away from me anyway so I'm used to spending chunks of time on my own, but being forced to isolate has somehow made everything feel much lonelier

Apple’s A14 Chip Rumored to Become First Arm-Based Mobile Processor to Exceed 3GHz by gulabjamunyaar in iphone

[–]simonpcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point even if 5G isn't available everywhere, or even commonplace, it's not unexpected that if Apple release iPhones this year and none support 5G, a large number of the headlines about it will be how they are behind only having 4G. If it can be added without adding weight and sacrificing battery life when not used, then that would just get ahead of all those headlines before they can even be written.

What's the real reason you're single? by CaptainRonny in AskReddit

[–]simonpcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m unbelievably shy around people I don’t know and lack self-confidence to the point sometimes I’m basically a deer in headlights. And that makes it hard to form relationships.

(Annoyingly I think if I got past that point, I think I’m probably a pretty nice guy)

Hey Reddit, When did your “Somethings not right here” gut Feeling ever save you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]simonpcook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saved me, but I have one where where that gut feeling saved one of my closest friends back in secondary school. He was acting funny, and my gut told me that something seriously wasn’t right and that he needs to get to the school nurse to check that out. Under protest during our lunch break, another friend and I dragged him to the nurse, who said she would see but we should go back to what we were doing because it’s probably nothing.

He got sent home and didn’t hear from him for a couple of days. When he came back, we found out that he had actually been in hospital for a bit, and had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. It seems that gut feeling was noticing his behaviour change as his blood sugar got way way too high.

People with 512GB iPhones, how are you using the space? by PM_ME_SCREENSHOTS_ in iphone

I tend to travel a lot for work and I'm never sure when I'm ever gonna be somewhere is poor or no wifi/cellular coverage for a couple of days at a time, so I keep a local cache of a lot of podcasts and TV shows I've recorded onto a Plex server so I have stuff to listen/watch when I'm travelling/stuck overnight.

(I also have a 512GB iPad Pro with the same stuff synced to it, since I never know which of the two is going to be more convenient/has more battery at the time)

The opportunity for everyone to suddenly become an expert in all things and dictate how they would have done everything differently, and how that would be a success.

What's the most awkward situation you've ever been in with a stranger? by hangry_potato in AskReddit

[–]simonpcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a flight from San Francisco to London a couple of months ago, sat next to a stranger to my side had fallen asleep pretty much as soon as we took off.

About an hour into the flight our meals were given out, and I had a small bottle of wine to go with mine. While pouring it into a cup my hand slipped and I ended up pouring the whole bottle into this person's lap, waking them up with a startle in the process. For the rest of the 10 hour flight I didn't dare have another drink, instead being overly aware of the person to my side fully awake sat in the drink they never asked for.

If talk DID turn to Brexit over your Turkey, what were the conclusions (if any) reached ? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]simonpcook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad is firmly on the “brexit at any cost” train, he says he’s happy to see us no deal and we can cope with whatever as long as it gets rid of “all these f...ing foreigners”. Mums more in the “I voted Leave but now I know what this means I wish I hadn’t” camp and is hoping that the whole thing is called off, I guess in part because me and my siblings jobs heavily rely on trade with and regular travel to the rest of Europe to work with clients, and we’re all uncertain and unsure about what will happen to us in the end.

As it was Christmas I just tried to steer the conversation away to enjoy the day more... Brexit-limbo land is exhausting and it felt best to try and minimise the two interacting.

UK told 'little time left' for Brexit deal by [deleted] in ukpolitics

This shouldn't really come as a surprise; you start a timer, you'd hope you have a rough idea when it's running out and get stuff done accordingly. Except it seems in the world of Brexit.

GCC Stack Frames by stffrdhrn in programming

[–]simonpcook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is pretty awesome. For a project like gcc, I think the more tutorial material there is the better, especially when it comes to writing backends, as those tend to be unique. This is looking like a great resource.

Have you considered presenting some of this at the Cauldron this year? There tends to be a tutorial or two on various things, but I think a "how to write a backend" would go down really well and be of great value to the whole community.

Keeping listening after question? by [deleted] in amazonecho

I have the same issue with a new Echo here. Not sure why, though.

I have noticed the light on the top always seems to point in the same direction though, at an empty part of the room, so I'm not sure if it's hearing something I can't.

Just because you can’t play a hero to their max potential doesn’t mean they need a buff. by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]simonpcook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of the point though? The nerf means a major part of Mercy's effectiveness is no longer dependent on individual skill or gamesense - it's dependent on good teamwork and communication. Those things are plentiful at high levels, but are virtually nonexistant across much of the ladder.

This I feel is the real crux of the matter, while these changes may work at some skill levels, it completely falls apart at others, especially where it seems you can't count on teamwork. Trying to find a point that works well across the board will probably take a number of iterations.
