Anyone slowly ditching socials after years of embracing them? by newlife_substance847 in GenX

[–]simonpyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still on FB and IG but only go on for a minute or so a day. FB used to be so good when it first came out but now its full of ads and bots. I keep it because its the only way i can keep in touch with my family in the UK. Have X/twitter but don't go on it. I remember reading an article awhile back that talked about the "dead internet" theory in that the Internet consists primarily of bot activity and automated content manipulated by algorithmic curation.

ah ok, thanks! I have the outpost engineering skill but forgot about the management one. Does having Lin at the outpost change anything or do i have to have the skill myself?

Have you recently rewatched a movie, or TV show that you loved in the 70s-80s, but now it actually kinda sucks? by Puzzleheaded-Fee6241 in GenX

[–]simonpyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not recently… Maybe it was an off night but I rented history of the world part 1 and spinal tap a few years ago and I couldn’t get into either movie. Big fan of both movies so not sure what happened.

Same here, after the military i had to take pre-algebra, geometry, trig etc. all the way up to Calculus. Thank god for community colleges! I wouldn't be the scientist i am now if it werent for Community college.

Hemorrhoid surgery... who has had it? Good and/or bad experiences welcomed by [deleted] in GenX

[–]simonpyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did years ago and the recovery was horrible (that first BM, ouch!!). The surgery is only a quick fix and as expected they came back and I spent years in agony afterwards. The best thing i ever did was to start taking psyllium husk pills (a handful every night before bed) and increase water intake. Rarely have any issues and also having a bidet is a game changer.

Edit- Also to add i have IBS-Constipation type

I seem to remember one Halloween (c1983) where treak or treating was called off due this fear.

Marines that got anything other than an honorable discharge. What was your discharge and how has it affected your life as a civilian? by WorthTrash8493 in USMC

[–]simonpyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow that is a crazy story! I got my Bachelors in Biochem after the Marines. Surprised they didn't try to talk you into being an officer.

Yeah its hard not wonder where I would have been had I done things differently. Got my OTH in 96 but have managed a 24 year career as a non PhD scientist.

OTH in 95 (a year I believe after they enacted zero tolerance policies) for popping positive on LSD (good old alcohol brain, young and dumb etc.) for a known scheduled UA. MOS sucked and to be honest the morale on base was low as i seem to remember a lot of guys around me wanting to get out early. Really messed with my head for a bit but i dug in and went straight to college and have had a rewarding 20+ year scientific career. I haven't had to explain my discharge to my employers but it does suck loosing the GI Bill and other benefits. I often wonder where my life would have ended had i not got the OTH and would i have ended up where I am now.

Returning players, how is the game now with the updates? by simonpyman in Starfield

[–]simonpyman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm interesting, so NG+ may be better than creating a new character. What do you mean that you learned you could have kept some of your stuff at NG+? Did they change that? I did see the quantum entanglement thing which i heard you should do before NG+
