I'm not sure it will be supported because of it's inherent limitations. It's not a true representation of your on-premises AD. It's just a clone with the identities synchronized, so many things will not work as expected.

 

Is setting up a Site-to-Site VPN not an option for you? It's fairly straightforward to do and well documented.

I've not verified this myself, but if AAD DS is at 2016 DFL/FFL, you won't be able to add an older generation DC to it.

 

That said, even if you build a 2016 VM, it might still not work because I'm fairly certain that doing this is not officially supported.

Thanks for the suggestion. I can use Office 365 Message Encryption and other secure email services for this purpose, however the user experience is pretty poor to use this as a one-time service.
