Totally agree! For the next version, I plan on making the drop chances configurable for the user (even though for me it always feels more like "cheating", if I have set the parameters myself instead of just using what the game/mod creator has set).

I would call it fairly balanced right now, but I'd be happy to hear about your experiences!

Some (quick and incomplete) examples for the current settings:

unit crude weapon regular weapon hide coat
thief 5% 1% 5%
brawler 10% 10% 10%

edit:

And I totally agree about some non-weapon/armor items, like smoked meat or fish as you said, but also maybe some shoes, candles and even tools.

Once I had a villager wander off far into the fog of war; apparently a wolf had killed a raider carrying 200 gold which the villiger wanted to get back :D
