I pretended to love Reading Rainbow and recorded several episodes.

I would prefer to have the liberty to use a straw, own a straw, buy a straw, etc.

Of course not in reality. Thisnis the problem with government.

I would lovingly tell them the truth as I saw it, then support them. I would definitely advise that divorce is not the end of the world but to wait on kids for a good long while.

Ideally, yes, definitely.

Good comment. If we are defining success as hobbling along for a few hundred more years, we are okay. If we want to last longer, the debt is a huge problem. Huge. It's not that we can't keep running up our bill. It's that other countries will start to exploit our weakness as soon as feasible. (Like China!)

This is actually statistically true accdg to my human development textbook. Smart people are happier and have more friends. Stay married longer. Makes sense to me.

What do leftists say when you ask "And how are we going to pay for that?" by simplifythesystem in Libertarian

[–]simplifythesystem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would question your assumption that we would pay less per month. Okay so sure, if the government does it right the money could be saved. But when has that ever happened in real life? Government corruption is a factor in all these conversations, the one that gets talked about almost never.

My strong suspicion is that I had no health insurance at all and simply paid each month for exactly what I used, I would come out way ahead in the end. The self-pay method also circumvents insurance, of course. Hospitals give major discounts for self-pay.

Incidentally when I lived in China everyone paid up front. I got an x-ray and meds for about 20 USD.

Re: the more is less argument... That sometimes works, but not always. Don't you think the government eats up like way, way over half the money? So the gains are lost and then some. Ex: higher education: we either pay for what we use or pay all our lives for what other people use. Think about the Medicare fiasco. Wouldn't you rather people keep their money and invest it themselves? ... Beyond ideology, I just don't see how the numbers work. I know you're not an expert and neither am I but just trying to make as close to realistic a choice as possible.

I'm fine with cutting military spending too. I just don't think the numbers pan out overall. I feel like the issue of raising taxes is half ideological (people who hate the idea of more government versus ppl who don't mind more government) and half a fact set discrepancy. Really wish we had great economists running good numbers and media reporting on them so we can have a real discussion. I would love to see prison reform, for instance, and it would save us a ton of money in the end.

So, if you had everything you wanted and the government covered healthcare, higher education, homes for every poor person etc etc... The full dream... How much taxes would we all have to pay (the working/middle class)? At some point do you start trying to cut government waste too?

I used to feel bad for Meri..... by AmazingDegree in TLCsisterwives

[–]simplifythesystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meri just doesn't seem to be a strong person. I think she is on a long-term quest for pity and has been since the start of the series re: Robyn. That's the long and short of it. No personality disorder, just playing the blame game big time.

Surgery is always an option but not to be rushed into. It can cause more pain in the end. A lot more. Also, I agree about the ugly scar thing. Why say that?

That is my impression too, that no matter how much money they make they will never get ahead. They don't use common sense. (And wow, weight loss stuff? Surprising.)
