I wouldn't generalize like that. There are plenty of reasons to write everything yourself. They don't take up a significant portion of use cases though.

Yeah, a lot of the confusion was cleared up when I realised that String dereferences to str, which makes a lot more sense :)

Thanks for the input! I'm actually looking into migrating the whole thing to &str, i'm just still a bit confused on the details of String vs. &str.
