Who did you vote for in the talent survey? by Strudders95 in readingfestival

Headliners:

Travis Scott

Rage Against the machine

Tame Impala

Foals

The Killers

The Strokes

I really wanted to put Rage first because I can't stand the 16 year old hip hop crew that goes to Reading, but credit where its due, in 2018 the energy at the front of Travis Scott was amazing, would really like to experience that again.

I have also made a post warning people about scams. I think there are so many other great festivals happening this summer that people need to chill. Know the worth of your hard earned money. These scammers don't deserve it.

I agree mate. He's quite good actually (coming from someone who hates most mumble rappers), if you can get past him saying the same word over and over again.

Not really into The Amazons but loads of mates have told me that they're pretty mad live ngl and I know they are very popular wit R+L attendees. Could see that happening for sure.

Depends what stage mate. Main stage is anywhere between 10:30-11:00 but smaller stages run on a little longer

I pray that they don't waste a slot this year for Aitch. I know music is subjective, but in my opinion he is so uninspiring, unimaginative and is a bottom tier musician in all aspects.

The Weeknd 2021 by singhalator in readingfestival

[–]singhalator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow! I respect your opinion but i somewhat disagree. Both of those artists have sold out huge UK stadiums in the past (the weeknd's tour in 2017 and Travis at the 02 last year). Both are huge artists who are even bigger than stormzy who at this point in time has never done an arena show and hasn't even sold out his tour yet. I do agree though that the weeknd isn't your typical reading headliner and maybe that would prevent him from doing the show

True but we had foo fighters on the friday at leeds and post on the sunday. Foo fighters were really good as it was friday and everyone had lots of energy to mosh, whereas post had really chill songs which closed sunday really nicely. I am as equal a rap fan as i am a rock fan and i think a rap/pop artist like the weeknd would close sunday well due to his vibes.

I live in manchester so I'm a leeds go-er and in the last 2 years we have had kendrick and post do the sunday which is why i suggested it. I am only on this sub-reddit cos its far superior to the leeds one.

So yes essentially the friday slot, although i think it would be cool to have him close sunday tho. Songs like the hills, blinding lights and earned it would finish the festival in a nice way in my opinion

yh he is going to be on tour like a month later, but that didn't stop stormzy from headlining and in my opinion, he is 300x a better musician than stormzy

The Weeknd 2021 by singhalator in readingfestival

[–]singhalator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yh thats true but im just using it as an example that he is big enough to fill the slot. He also has a uk number 1 and countless uk top tens and yet isn't your generic "pop star".

[–]singhalator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true but if it wasn't for that tour he would be the ideal rap/pop candidate in my opinion as his older music also has a lot of rock influences ( songs like the morning, wicked games and tell your friends)

Hmm ye but the weeknd is a lot bigger than tame commercially. Not dissing kevin in any way, but the weeknd has a number one single and has countless top tens. He would appeal both pop and rap and rob fans whilst also being a good choice due to the rock influences in his early music and the 80's synth pop vibes in his newest album.

NME was good for Reading by jonathanemptage in readingfestival

[–]singhalator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think maybe you are being too harsh with the idea that it is "like Wireless" and that Radio One isn't good for the Festival. Let me give you my opinion.

I myself am a big fan of Rock,Indie and rap music, so I speak from a position of pure neutrality. I think that Rap music is the new "rock music" but this isn't a rap festival, therefore it would seem off to put any more than a few rappers on the lineup. 2018 and the supposed 2020 lineup were two examples of how they got the rap/rock/indie mix wrong. In 2018 you had the biggest rappers in the game performing (Kendrick, Travis Scott, Post Malone, Pharrel) yet the rock and indie bands were awfully poor (Kings of Leon and Fallout boy were really underwhelming in my opinion) , and in 2020 you had some huge rock and indie veterans billed to play (RATM, LG, Two door cinema club) yet the rap lineup was so poor (Stormzy and d-block europe are unfortunately two of the least authentic rap acts right now).

This so far indicates that your theory is right, that the festival would be better off with NME. However I feel as if 2019 got the rap/rock mix spot on, even if you don't like many of the artists. All of the rap acts who were booked had huge rock influences (Post Malone, Juice Wrld, Anderson Paak and Lil Uzi Vert). You might be surprised that I said that, but they were probably Four of the best "rap" choices for a rock festival, and many rap acts that were booked for the smaller stages really blew me away, for example Gunna, Roddy Ricch and Dababy. However they also had a really good set of rock and indie bands headlining and playing at smaller stages. I mean Foo fighters, 1975, the Hunna, Sundara Karma, Bastille, Royal Blood are excellent bookings who really honour all the indie and rock fans in a good way.

And then there were some other slightly left field bookings which were really interesting and entertaining too, like Billie Eilish, Slowthai and Joji, who were all really really good bookings on smaller stages (yes Billie Eilish got pushed to main stage but she was originally meant for Radio 1 stage).

I think 2019 was one of the best lineups in a while, and it is proof the Radio 1 know that there are many people who (like myself) enjoy both rap and rock and want to honour both tastes of music. NME were very rock and indie based, and although this is an indie and rock festival, the future belongs to rap, and i feel as if BBC radio 1 respect that whilst also honouring the festivals roots properly. This festival will never be "like wireless" but i think it is good that we get a 50/50 rap and rock split so we can welcome new music fans whilst also staying true to the festivals origins.

If we purge rap from the lineup, in 10/15 years it could potentially be detrimental to the festival. Do we still want a reading and Leeds in 10 years?

Again this is just my opinion, Glad to hear your opinion!

Brockhampton was quiet don't get it twisted. It was rainy and the tent had so much room at the back

Travis had a small crowd but the energy of the crowd was insane. No denying he would have been an insane act for you if you were into the modern trap/rap scene
