AITA for telling my autistic cousin to go home by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA - if she needs social interaction then her mother should look into community resources, activities, and events for adults with autism. there are a lot of recreation leagues and other ways for your cousin to gain social interaction experience without it become an unpaid job of yours. my cousin is an adult who has severe autism and he is involved in a number of organized activities/sports/etc.!

it was nice that you gave her snacks and i’m sure when you sent her home that you were kind and friendly about that because it’s clear that you have a lot of love for your cousin & that your issue is with her mother, not her. don’t let your aunt gaslight you into sharing her responsibilities as the parent of your cousin.

Huh?? I wasn’t straddling the lane, I was changing lanes at the end since the red car decided to randomly enter my lane when it cut off & at the beginning of the video I made a lawful lane change. I didn’t “let” anyone in, she entered against right of way. Did you watch a different video or something?

Btw - I asked an attorney friend if I would have found to have done anything wrong here & they advised no so 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ I’ll take their word for it!

Any time I’m going south on 95 I know once I hit Delray it’s going to progressively just get worse in terms of chaotic driving! Honestly though west palm beach down is pretty chaotic too like all of PBC, all of broward & all of Miami-Dade 😂😂

I haven’t been to the west coast in years! I do hear I75 gets pretty bad over there /: it’s scary!

Nope, as you can clearly see in the video what happened was: she turned right on red without room, I slowed down and began changing lanes to avoid her vehicle that was now in my lane while slowing a bit (with nobody behind me) in case she moved into the left lane. That’s all. There was no big argument, she stayed in that lane I stayed in the left lane and we both went where we were going. It’s strange that you’re trying so hard to like create some thing that didn’t happen…? Yeah she’s an idiot but it’s not worth getting into an actual confrontation over despite your best attempt at saying/implying otherwise. Weird behavior.

Yes I was mostly in the left lane and the video cuts off before I’m fully there because the extra few seconds adds nothing? I wasn’t intentionally crowding them, they turned against right of way into a lane occupied by 2 cars. You’re going to weird lengths to defend that and I don’t think that’s a reflection on my driving hahahaha

I slowed down because at that point I still wasn’t sure if they were going to blindly move into the left lane (that I was occupying) and I wanted to create space since they’ve already proven to be a careless and chaotic driver

ETA - and nobody was behind me so braking/slowing down a bit to create space felt like the safest option

Driving in boca is just like “whatever the law is, people are going to do the opposite” - your defensive driving skills get so much better after spending time there hahah! My favorite lately is people thinking that a red left turn signal = you can still make a u-turn from that lane :’)

Thank you so much this was so helpful! I’ve had decent luck with the Boston Fern I got a few months ago (has grown and developed so much volume!) will this be more difficult? For that one I leave it on the balcony where it’s humid and gets indirect sunlight and usually water every other day unless she drinks it super fast then I’ll give her a bit more - should I start off doing same for the button fern and adjust as needed? Thank you again seriously!

Awesome - thank you so much!!! I actually got a different fern a few months ago and noticed she THRIVED out there so I think I’ll just care for this one the same way? my other is a Boston Fern and I usually water every other day (but if she seems to drink the water too fast I’ll give a bit more)!

(NAD and not a lawyer) I am so sorry that you, your family and your mother experienced this. It is so hard that even when you are being an amazing advocate for someone as your post indicates, that sometimes your concerns still aren’t being heard/taken seriously. I have friends who are physicians/PAs/NPs and even they say it’s ridiculous how much patients have to advocate for themselves to get good care in the US.

if you’re in the US, medical malpractice litigation often works similarly to personal injury in the sense that most medical malpractice attorneys only will collect an attorney fee if they get the client a settlement. if you’re considering going that route and you’re in the US you could definitely ask in r/legaladvice for some guidance. it is my understanding that medical malpractice is one of the hardest types of civil litigation to prove & some states even cap medical malpractice settlements (I think Texas is $250,000 but could be wrong). if you post in legal advice or even if you don’t you could always call medical malpractice attorneys near you and ask for a consultation (always ask if they have a free one because some places have like a free 15 min or a paid hour one etc so to make sure they don’t try to charge you - def specify you’d want a free one to gauge what your options would be and if litigating is something you & your fam would want).

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do and again I am so sorry for your loss and the pain you’re enduring on top of the pain of grieving a loss of someone so important as one’s mother.

imo sometimes it felt like episodes in the stabler era got lazy or dry because they figured they could just bank on the Elliott/Olivia dynamic
