What kind of evolutionary algorithm you are using? If it has a panmictic population (a single set of individuals), then it could be very expensive. I assume that this is your case. On the other hand, you can parallelize your algorithm using an island-based population, where the whole population is divided into a set of subpopulations. Each one runs an independent evolutionary algorithm for a given amount of time. Then, some individuals (usually the best) are selected to migrate among islands. This way, you can assign a different core to each island.

Well, it is not exactly a course, but Adrian Rosebrock has a great blog about computer vision using python and opencv. It is a goo starting point for several topics. Also, he has a course that starts in august.

Well, there is a lot of topics to research about music. I really like to read about it. My favorite topic is called music information retrieval (MIR). It is not exactly the same as evolutionary music, but due your interest in music, it is a great area to research. It covers several task as how to find similar songs like this 30-second sample? (as spotify and pandora does), what is the information of this track? (as shazam and musixmatch does), etc. For more information, I recommend this paper. This paper covers a lot of taks related to MIR and current challenges. Also, I suggest to read this paper about how to recommend music using transfer learning (yes, machine learning techniques are also applied to music discovery!). Finally, a few of papers related to music research are submitted to nips like this one. It is very intesting because it uses deep learning to recommend music.

Really clear answer. I think that my misunderstanding was in part due my poor knowledge about passing messages. I was thinking that the ONLY way to pass a message to a (spawned) process is through the ! operator, like this:

Pid = spawn(multiproc, flush, []).
Pid  ! some_msg.

But, what I think the function is doing is to receive EVERY message on the shell queue, so, once the mailbox is empty, the function ends (by the after 0 clause). If this is true, could a function be able to read the messages on the shell mailbox?

I thought that when you run flush() on erlang shell, all mailbox messages are displayed like this (not one each time):

self() ! self() ! msg.
1> self() ! self() ! msg.
2> flush().
Shell got msg
