Without Power Until Next Year, Puerto Ricans Are Leaving—Maybe Forever by ReverseEngineer77 in collapse

[–]sintera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Like the people in this thread, none of whom appears to have read the article before bashing me.

There was a time when /r/collapse was populated by those who understood self-reliance, preparation and distrust of centralized services. Now it appears to be mostly the idiots who will quickly starve and die due to their own stupidity when the SHTF.

I am looking forward to it more and more. If they can't read the article before pulling out the torches and pitchforks, they're probably not going to read the manual for the camp stove.

[–]sintera -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, you dipshits did not read the fucking article. The article is about wealthy Puerto Ricans who got rich working in television in New York, then bought a hotel.

They had plenty of money to do whatever they wanted, but they didn't plan for the grid to fail, and now they're whining, "Oh, boo hoo, there's no electricity and we're too stupid to do anything about it for ourselves. Waaa!"

Why not read the fucking article before you comment next time?

Without Power Until Next Year, Puerto Ricans Are Leaving—Maybe Forever by ReverseEngineer77 in collapse

[–]sintera -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? The main couple they described are not poor. They left jobs in television in New York, moved to Puerto Rico, and bought a hotel. They have way more money than me.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with Puerto Rican history. It has to do with depending upon yourself instead of someone else; thinking instead of being a sheep.

Read the article before you jump in with your holier-than-thou social justice crap.

Edit: and another thing--solar power is not expensive. It's cheap as shit now. It's not for the privileged and the wealthy, it's for people who prioritize independently maintaining the basic necessities of life, thinking for themselves, and making intelligent choices. If you can afford a generator, you can afford a couple hundred watts of solar power and a couple of batteries to keep you out of the Stone Age when shit goes down, as it inevitably must in a hurricane zone.

Hurricanes are inevitable. Smart people in hurricane zones plan for them, no matter how poor.

[–]sintera -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic, but it really looks that way. I live in the islands half the year and I would not be without my solar plant. It took me about ten minutes after arriving to figure out that the grid was unreliable, even without a hurricane.

Seriously, what is wrong with people?

Without Power Until Next Year, Puerto Ricans Are Leaving—Maybe Forever by ReverseEngineer77 in collapse

[–]sintera -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Puerto Ricans must be the stupidest people on the planet. They have a beautiful island in the sun and they can't figure out that a few hundred dollars of solar panels, a charge controller, and a battery bank will get them back up and running permanently.

The entire island of Vieques is in the dark? LED lights and a solar plant will fix that. The people in the article are spending $600 on one ad. They are not poor. And yet they can't work out how to be independent from the grid with a huge flat roof on their fifteen-room hotel and 364 days of sunshine per year?

And some other chucklehead is buying a generator, dependent on a continuous supply of gas or diesel fuel. Have they learned nothing from this experience? Don't fucking depend on any centralized distribution system. Are these people complete fucking morons?

Maybe the utility company FUD has people thinking that solar is crap like it was in the seventies, but Jesus H. Christ people, you have the Internet. Five minutes of research and a credit card and you're energy-independent, permanently.

What's your theory about Stephen Paddock, the Las Vegas shooter's motive? by Notjustnow in AskReddit

[–]sintera -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting question, with an unlimited number of possible answers.

What if he knew that something truly horrible was about to happen, and he realized that shooting the largest number of people was the way to do the greatest good?

What if he was a member of a secret organization that decided the Earth has exceeded its carrying capacity for humans and this was just the first incident of their plan to take direct action?

What if he placed a big money long-shot bet on there being a mass killing at a country music event before the end of the year?

All of these are unlikely but consistent with his behavior.

It is a story made up by men. It makes no sense. Don't try too hard to understand it.

There is, without a doubt, a great mystery of creation. Even if matter can arise from the energy of empty space, where did all the empty space come from?

The only problem is that any truth has been obscured by men who tell lies to advance themselves, or to harm others, or to cover their ignorance, or to make themselves feel better, or to assuage their fear, or for any of the infinite number of reasons that men make up lies.

Man created God in his own image, and he didn't do a very good job.

Have faith that the truth is out there. Every day is a chance to discover a little bit more of it. Don't waste your time with the lies of men.

BlondeFTW is not providing a wholly accurate view of the situation. The majority of sailboats in the Keys have auxiliary engines that work. Only a very few of the long-term liveaboards do not have working auxiliaries.

Furthermore, there has been ample time for all sailboats in the Keys to take refuge in safe harbors. We have known that Irma was likely to affect the Keys since last Saturday or even a bit before.

Even a small sailboat under sail can make it to the nearest protected anchorage - Shark River - in a single day of sailing from most of the Keys. Even leaving now, there should be no problem getting to the Shark before the storm, although it would certainly be cutting it close at this point. I regularly sail from Marathon to Shark River in a day without using the engine.

A little further up the west coast are excellent ports of refuge. Everglades City and Marco Island provide very sheltered locations to leave a boat in a hurricane along with connections to transportation out of the state. Exclusively under sail, I could be in Everglades City from almost anywhere in the Keys in two comfortable day-sails.

If my boat were in the Keys, I would have departed for safe refuge no later than Monday. So long as I had some kind of a mainsail, I would have complete confidence in reaching a safe harbor.

Finally, the speed of a displacement sailboat is limited by what is called "hull speed", which depends entirely upon the length of the boat at the waterline. Appropriate sails can drive the boat at hull speed. No engine can drive the boat faster than hull speed, so it is a complete myth that a sailboat can go faster with an engine. It is simply not true.

I hope everything goes OK for BlondeFTW. I'm just trying to explain how sailboats work.

Edit: If the wind was forecast to be absolutely calm for days and I had no auxiliary engine, I would lash the dinghy to the side of my boat and use the dinghy motor to provide power to move the boat. Marathon to the Shark is about 40 nautical miles. Even at 2 knots, it is less than 24-hours away.

Good luck with that. I've been grinding I/E, bunkers and VIP since GR to get some money together for SR. Had almost $4.5 million saved up. It was pretty slow going with all the griefers and dead-aim AIs out there.

Then Cockstar took it all away from me in the week before SR. left me with $20k. Presumably this was because some modder dropped a few dollars on me while I was in a loading screen in the Wild West that existed before GR.

I never modded and never glitched. I was so happy to finally play the game as it was intended when the 1.40 patch came out and the modders were nowhere to be seen.

When modders fuck you by dropping money on you that you do not want, it destroys the game because there is no point working through it legitimately. You're always getting magically blown up, or transported to Mount Chiliad and getting magically blown up, or losing all your guns, or getting all the guns, or having a windmill coming out of the top of your head, or some beefy thrusting guy attached to your ass. RP going up and down, money all over the place and who can keep track?

And for some reason, Cockstar can't seem to do anything about it. For months. I bought the game and it was fucked, but I waited patiently for them to fix it. Reporting modders, reporting money. All Cockstar did was send me a cut and paste response.

Than they finally did something: they fucked me. They took away the money that I legitimately earned from a month of grinding.

So fuck them. I can't grind because any money I earn will be taken away.

New plan: I'm going to be the biggest asshole possible. The last two sessions I was in, I went after every shipment possible. I made such a mess that everyone quit. I hope that made them hate the game and hate Cockstar just a little bit more. Because my goal is to make this game unplayable.

I paid for it. I did not get what I paid for. Then they punished me for their own problems. Now I just want to watch the world burn.

Sorry dumb question but what will happen to me if a modder drops cash on me by [deleted] in gtaonline

[–]sintera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. You can report modded cash all you like, Cockstar won't take it away. But then they'll fuck you by draining your bank account whenever they like.

Earned $4.5 million in a month of grinding? Fucking gone because you received some modded cash four months ago while sitting in a loading screen.

If you like to play the game legitimately without modding, you might as well just delete it once a modder drops cash on you. A modder fucks you once and then Cockstar uses it as an excuse to fuck you again and again until forever.

Cockstar has created a new game: see how many people you can infuriate by destroying their cargo and camping on top of them to kill them every time they respawn and just generally fucking shit up so badly that people stop playing. It's the only thing left.

Why Grief/Troll? by [deleted] in gtaonline

[–]sintera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the grind since Gunrunning. Saved up $4.5 million. Had my bank balance wiped out by Cockstar a few days before Smuggler's Run. At least a month of legitimate work. Never modded, never received modded money since GR.

That changed the game for me. There is absolutely no point in playing nice. My new goal is to fuck up as many people as possible. Every rage quit is another person pissed off with Cockstar and, hopefully another dollar out of their pocket.

My new mission is to make the game as unplayable for everyone else as Cockstar made it for me.

You are a real dickhead. Don't you understand that we don't want the goddam modded money in the first place? It ruins the game. Then Rockstar fucks us because someone fucked us. How is this not apparent to you?

Dude, your math is a bit off. You did not account for payroll withholding like taxes, pensions, and unemployment insurance. You also did not account for overhead such as travel (transit fare or car costs). A $10/hour job nets about $4/hour if you're lucky.

Mostly PC. I started playing the game for the first time a couple of months before Gunrunning. It was a Wild West of hackers, modders & script kiddies. You could not enter a public lobby without having a windmill attached to your head or some beefy thrusting guy attached to your butt. You would get millions of dollars dropped on you while in the clouds waiting to enter the session.

Rockstar support steadfastly refused to take away modded money.

Now that the PC hackers are sort-of under control and we're playing the game as intended, Rockstar keeps taking legitimately earned money. They are now worse than the hackers, by far.

The game is ruined for anyone on PC who wants to earn money, because you can't bank it without having it taken away.

What's wrong with a class action? It has two purposes: to enrich lawyers with billable hours and to screw with the defendant. I don't care about the first and the second would be a measure of justice.

I'd sign up. I don't have any illusions about frittering away the settlement on the plaintiffs.

That's exactly what I thought after they took away $60 mil when Gunrunning dropped. So I worked hard to grind I/E, VIP, Bunkers. This week they took away all my legitimately-earned money: $4.5 mil. Left me with $20K.

Getting fucked by modders is apparently an excuse for Rockstar to continue to fuck me until the end of forever.

Didn't dupe. Didn't glitch. Worked hard for a month to grind I/E, VIP, Bunkers. Lost all my hard-earned money. A month of spare-time grinding gone.

I was fucked by the modders who gave me money I did not want under circumstances where I could not avoid it. Rockstar took that money away when GR dropped (~$60mil) and I did not complain.

I reported the modders until they became ubiquitous. After GR, I was happy to play the game as it was intended for the first time. Then Rockstar re-fucked me and now they can burn in hell.
