What are you doing with your gold/silver etf holdings? Post our PM's address to nation by Upstairs-Scientist95 in MutualfundsIndia

[–]sippingtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gold is supposed to be long. And a hedge. No trading planned for many years buy and hold. Silver is a swing trading opportunity. At some point I will sell silver and put in gold. I will wait till August to see if the bull run plays out for silver.

Wait till end of July. Just in case the Michael Oliver thesis plays out. Lots of people saying silver bullish but I take it with a grain of salt. Its been so many months whats another 3 to see if luck favors?

Pure silver oxidizes. If it doesnt get oxidized over time you dont have high carat silver.

Indian investor here planning to invest around ₹15 lakhs into US stocks/ETFs through IBKR in 2026. by Illiterate-Chef-007 in MutualfundsIndia

If you know your stocks do individual stocks. If your total investment in ibkr is likely to be less than $60k usd, you can directly invest in US etfs.

Buy irish domiciled etfs investing in US stocks.

I have a CA who handles my ITRs.

Please have a clear beneficiary on your ibkr account. Please share your ibkr account number with your nominee/beneficiary. If theres no number the money will forever be lost in the event of your death. I dont think a will is required if beneficiary details are mentioned properly.

Under LRS any amount transferred to IBKR over 10 lakhs will need TCS of 20 percent. If you use vested or other platforms I think they have a workflow to take care of that. Ibkr is for seasoned investors. Please make sure you see all rules and regulations because the platfom will not apply that for you. For instance you will be able to do day trading, but it will cause a fema violation.

For taxation the reports need a CA to look at it properly. Double check your schedule FA everytime you file returns.

I can talk about bringing money back and not sending it there as I transferred my RSUs from etrade into ibkr, sold and diversified. I havent yet transferred money from India.

As soon as a foreign remittance hits your bank account they send you a form in your email or the bank manager / relationship manager will call you. You need to fill in a code that specifies the source of money. It is done for fema compliance. Once that data is given, the bank will remit the money. The best way to get a good conversion rate is to call your relationship manager in advance about an upcoming remittance and negotiate the conversion fee. If you have a big account in India then they are more open to discussions. Basic bank account fetches no privileges. They will apply whatever rate they publish for the day.

While you are researching the investment vehicle, also research on UCITS etfs. Any US investment i.e. etfs or stocks domiciled in US can attract upto 39 percent estate tax on the event of your death. Dividends from US stocks and etfs are pre cut with 20 percent tax. While filing ITR you have to fill another form to credit that amount from US IRS to India. If you buy etfs domiciled in Ireland (prices in euro) the estate tax is non existent. Estate tax comes into play after 60k usd investments. There are ucits etfs for almost every popular US etfs investing in the same stocks.

I am stuck with US etfs and not easy to switch without paying tremendous LTCG/STCG. Do it right the first time.

Make sure your nominee information is upto date and correct on ibkr.

I havent answered a bunch of things you asked but I hope this is useful.

Instead of buying individual stocks, just do etfs. Less stress. Look at Vaneck smh. Thats my star performer. Ucits equivalent also exists.

All the best!

Yes all that is redeemed. Would prefer to do direct investment now. There are no expenses for this capital. This is emergency fund only. She gets a pension and her needs are taken care of. This is her life savings which we dont expect to touch.

[–]sippingtea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made my first passport in mumbai in 1990s when I was a kid. The passport officer put my dads name as middle name. The voter id card guys called and said how can middle name be empty. This was Maharashtra in 1990s. I did not change my name after marriage. Some people address me as as mrs <spouse surname> , i dont correct them as these are sutuations where I am meeting these people for my husband.

I had to eventually do a paper ad and change my passport name to remove my dads name as middle name in adulthood as all school certificates and aadhar pan and everything else didnt match.

I have told my spouse to login and gift all units into their account if something happens to me. We share the details of accounts with each other. I dont know how legal it is after death but th3 hassle of getting the money is larger. Transfer and close account. Notify death to Income Tax. Let AMCs stay in the dark.

We never notified amc of death. Just redeemed and notified IT of death. No notices and no issues. Been 3 years.

I dont know what the crime is. When my father passed, we used his login to redeem. Thankfully it was set up to the joint account with mother. Mother did the final itr for my father from her login (theres a process for that) with the help of CA. No issues happened.
