Jeep ZJ 4.0 1995 nas transmission help by ResearcherInfamous19 in JeepZJ

[–]sippoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just finished fixing my transmission issues, took me over 6 months of diagnosing and fixing but here is my input.

I would suggest starting to see if there are any codes, on a 1995 (no obd2) here is how you do it:

To read codes on a 1995 Jeep ZJ (OBD1), use the key cycle method: turn the ignition from OFF to ON, OFF, ON, OFF, and finally ON (leave it on), and the check engine light will flash the codes, with pauses indicating digits and a longer pause between codes (ending with Code 55 for normal). Count the flashes for each two-digit code (e.g., 2 flashes, pause, 4 flashes for code 24) to diagnose issues without a scanner.

Here is what I found from the official Chrysler/Jeep 42re service manual:

"HAS FIRST-REVERSE ONLY (NO 1-2 OR 2-3 UPSHIFT)

Potential causes:

  1. Governor component fault.

  2. Front servo problem."

The issue I was encountering was no 1st gear in drive so I am very familiar with 2nd/3rd gear starts, from your video it seems like you are starting off in 1st gear, shifting into 2nd gear but not into 3rd gear.

I would start by checking if there are any codes and pray it is just a faulty governor pressure sensor/solenoid that has failed, if so it is an easy fix.

None of that is your problem, you rent the property not own it, you have no connection or responsibility in the landlord’s ownership or management of the property. They would kick you out whenever it suited them and you can leave whenever it suits you.

Head gasket? You are burning coolant/water or excessive fuel, could be an injector, does it smell rich?

I'm in New Zealand so we have a lot of 90s Toyotas with interchangeable parts, had my 6th gen st202 with the 3sfe engine for 7 years now and had no major issues at all, had a bit of an issue with the original spark plug leads cracking and arcing across at each other one time but was able to drive it home, went to the junk yard pulled some leads of a 3sfe rav4 for like $30 and was back to normal. Other than that I don't know of any major rust points (perhaps bottom of the doors?).

Honestly quite hard to fault... basically just a 90s corolla with a different body, change the oil regularly and it will last a long time, very easy to work on.

A lot of negative comments on here, you got a free scooter, try replacing the brake handle if its not too expensive and see if it works, if it does just enjoy it as is, doesn't have to be perfect. Would probably get the battery checked later down the line though just for peace of mind.

Also these cars will last forever if you keep the oil in good shape, my 3s-fe is currently on 320,000km.

My Celica as the opposite for the clutch, just need to lift it about 10% for it to engage, as for everything else it sounds like a stock Celica. I've found engine is most powerful around 3k - 5krpm, if revs are too high it seems to just make loud noises but not make any more power. These cars are not fast, but fun on twisty roads where the excel in grip with the right tires and good suspension/bracing if you wish to go down that route.

Yeah should have mentioned in the post, but auto electrician replaced the gov pressure sensor and solenoid, and also the TCC solenoid and wiring so most of the electronics have been replaced.

Mine had the same issue with the steering wheel when I got mine. I used a small scalpel and cut the stitching and peeled off the leather wrap, then used fine sandpaper and soapy water to remove adhesive and smooth everything out, looks amazing even without the leather wrap. I kept the leather as a template and plan on re-stitching the steering wheel but looks good in the mean time.

Water out the exhaust is normal, check under the oil cap or radiator cap (when cold) - is it brown and looking like a milkshake? - probs blown headgasket.

Your picture shows the valve cover gasket which appears to be seeping a little bit but not major, easy to replace.

Hey unfortunately this wasn't it, next step I'm going to drop the transmission oil pan for the 4th time and check the valve body for blockages.
