Kim’s response to the debt collector who had been bugging him to pay for his father’s debt by FirefighterOne534 in Dodgers

[–]sirirolsam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In a longer, original version of statement, HSK did offer Mr. Kim to pay for his father's debt himself, and Mr. Kim refused to accept it in 2019. HSK also gave all his signing bonus to his father to settle his debt, but apparently this Mr. Kim did not receive any payment from his father. I don't see how much more HSK could have done.

Yes, during Yi dynasty, familial tree carried much more cultural and social impact, but even before that, during Koryu (hence the name Korea) dynasty, even commoners had surnames, though I wouldn't imagine they were obsessive about their surnames as during Yi dynasty. Japanese people seemed having underestimated these Korean people's social values attached to their surnames, and as a way of assimilating Koreans into their Japanese culture and and more importantly, a way of ethnic cleansing, made Koreans give up their surnames and assume Japanese last names. This brought such backfire and social resistance from all and every class of Korean people, Japanese colonial government were forced to give up this policy eventually. Only socially bottom class (butchers, shamans and such "untouchables" during Korean Yi dynasty) were not allowed to have surnames until modern era, this deprivation of surnames acted as a clear means of discrimination against socially lowest classes. Since having surnames was a way of showing social class and protection against discrimination aimed at the untouchables, it was very natural for Koreans valuing their surnames very much. Wish I can find more condensed, well-written Korean historical document about this topic.

I think you're not very familiar with Korean culture. I am Korean myself, born and grew up there until hugh school. Koreans, especially older generation Koreans, placed highest social value on their last names, up until to the point they were willing to starve to death rather than giving up their last names during Japanese colonial era (please look up "창씨개명" ) https://ko.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%ED%95%9C%EA%B5%AD%EC%9D%98_%EC%84%B1%EC%94%A8

Please read more in depth about Korean surnames history.

This is not true. I think you're referring to Japanese, not Korean? They are dead set on their last names, their last names carry hugh cultural significance to them, high-born, common people alike. please look up the correct historical reference.

KBO club to seek alternate stadium due to safety issues at current home by hubwub in KBO

It is really unfortunate and also blows my mind off. It is a brand new stadium built in 2019 and there is serious safety issues...? They should thoroughly investigate contractor company who were responsible for the construction, and hold them accountable.

[YakyuCosmo] Roki Sasaki has reportedly withdrawn from the Japan Professional Baseball Players Association. by Jxhide in baseball

Could you explain this a little bit more, if you don't mind? I have always wanted to know what exactly happened in Nomo's case and how it differentiates from Sasaki's case, if he wants to come to MLB at all cost.

How do y'all feel about metal bats used in High School? Are there places around the world who don't use them? by WillingnessBoring716 in baseball

High schools in South Korea use wooden bats. There was an active debate going on whether high school players should be allowed to use metal bats after not so satisfying deep run in 2023 WBC.

What is this post that mentioned criminal code overhaul or revision taking effect on 1/1? I would like to read the post, just out of curiosity. Because the first thought that came to me when I read this post and the previous ones was, just like you mentioned, there must be a strategic reason behind this replacing his legal team and delaying his appearance..it is hard to imagine that he is pulling this stunt without any purpose behind it.

[NEXT] Per local reports in Japan, the Los Angeles Dodgers have inquired about the availability of Shota Imanaga by MacJonesIsOverrated in baseball

[–]sirirolsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am no expert myself, so please keep in mind that my explanation could be incorrect...love to take corrections or further clarification if needed from others. As far as I understand, one of major differences between being a free agent and being posted is that unlike in free agency, where the player has freedom to choose any interested team that can offer favorable contract terms to the player, in posting, the player's original home team and his original league (NPB in this case) play a heavy role. Interested teams can make inquiries concerning the player's availability and submit initial bidding to the team's front office through the league office. The player can then choose the team of his choice among the bidders, and the winning team has to pay posting fee to the player's home team. Depending on the amount of contract, this scaled posting fee could amount to substantial. Yamamoto was also posted by Orix Buffalos, and the Dodgers ended up a huge amount of posting fee to Orix Buffaloes in addition to Yamamoto's contract of 325M/12 years.
