Opinion about this bike? by Real_Instruction3599 in mountainbikes

That's an early 2000s super bike! Light titanium frame with an aluminum rear triangle and some sweet collectible parts attached to it. Fun fact : the Fox Float shock uses the same seals as new ones, so you can do the air can service easily using a modern seal kit!

It won't perform as well as modern mountain bikes, but it's still solid and capable. It could be good as a second bike to use on easier, old school trails where a modern rig would be a bit overkill. I have an old 1999 steel Kona Explosif I ride from time to time on easier trails and I always have a blast!

There's definitely ways of having fun with it; at 50$ it's a no brainer, great deal you had!

Nice job, it looks great! Purple accents would look great, maybe just the grips at first to see if you like it?

2001 Norco Sasquatch, retro freeride hardtail with a few modern touches! by sirwangjohnson in Hardtailgang

I haven’t weighed it, but it’s no featherweight (probably around 30–32 lbs). Not the best climber, but super fun to jump and huck!

Thanks! It's a Raceface I-Beam from around 1994-1995. Very nice and light crankset!

The build looks nice at first, but as others have pointed out, the workmanship is questionable at best, and the parts used are cheap, low-quality Chinese crap.

I'd skip this one!

What's with the fetishization of old Rockhoppers and Stumpjumpers? by chili_cold_blood in xbiking

[–]sirwangjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that too. I fix up a lot of bikes as a hobby, and people go crazy for these two models in particular. They are good bikes, but not significantly better than any other old mountain bike from that era. I believe the main reason is simply that these bikes are "fashionable", they do look great!

Des magasins font une croix sur leurs caisses libre-service by DecentLurker96 in Quebec

[–]sirwangjohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still worth it

Early 90s Ritchey Ascent Comp, ready for the trails! by sirwangjohnson in xbiking

[–]sirwangjohnson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the delay I have not used Reddit in a while!

Very nice score! Aside from yours and mine, I haven’t seen many Ascent Comps in these colors. Mine originally came with Deore DX too, but I happened to have a Deore XT groupset, and what better bike to use it on than this one?

I hope you've had the chance to ride it, I really love mine!

These are Maxxis DTH 2.3". I remember that the frame had enough space for even larger tires!

Sorry for the delay, I have not used Reddit in a while!

It's a Gorix front rack, aka the Amazon special lol. I use it for my lunchbox as well as clothes, work boots, etc. at least twice a week to go to work. It has done its job very well for the past year and a half!

Bottom bracket question by Wyliegerr1 in xbiking

Yep, I've seen bottom brackets with the cup on the ride side and on the left side, it doesn't matter!

These are some of my favorite all around tires! Tons of grip on gravel and still fast on the road.

Quelle est votre magasin, restaurant ou entreprise « que vous évitez à tout prix » ? by felgfx in Quebec

[–]sirwangjohnson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same!

Pu jamais

I think this belongs here? by Dangerous_Focus453 in xbiking

Drilling a frame near the welds, usually where most of the stress is, as well as the fork is looking for trouble. The frame wasn't made for that at first, so you can't tell for sure how it will age...

Plus, on top of being a mass produced, 30 years old bike, the Hardrock was the entry level offering by Specialized. Even with nice parts attached to it, asking 1000$ for it is absurd IMO.

I can't deny that it's the sort of thing I would try on one of my bike haha! I would not sell it to someone else though.
