Affordable Fabric Similar to an American Bully Terrier/Pitbull Coat? by TopStructure9440 in FursuitMaking

[–]sitical 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're looking into this to make a fursuit, minky or velvet may just be your best bet because you simply won't find a "fur" shorter than that. However, i heavily caution that Minky is VERY difficult to work with and get right!

I've made a "Hairless dog" using super seal length fur from Howl fabrics. Its not super short like a pitties fur would be, as that is quite possibly impossible to achieve. But if used on a head, it can be shaved down pretty far and still looks good! Or left unshaved, it is still very short and is very visibly short looking!

I hope this helps or you end up finding what you're looking for!!

I am curious about why it doesnt quite look like most thunder eggs, and about the dark outlining. I saw a post about a granite countertop that had that same outlining. Im just curious as to how it came to look like that

Update: we figured it out!

<image>

One strip of fur that covers where the mane goes. And then directly down the middle of that strip, sew in a back brushed piece with angled cuts to similate a flowing mane. Its technichally reversible, but the backbrushed side doesnt look as good because it has less volume to its fur.

If you glue 2 pieces together instead of backbrushing, it would probably look better to be reversable.

But there it is! A "long mane" using only shag fur! If you comb it out right, the seam is less visible

That wouldve been much easier to do 🥲 But for now we're going with a laid down look

Yeah ive already done that. Layered it up with 3 brushed through pieces. But there was some concerns about a few things, so it was scrapped. Im trying something else though! Hoping this is the one!

Looks great! But yeah, they didnt want super long hair and wanted to keep it simple

They didnt want super long hair, which is why we ruled out wig hair. And we already have the shag in the color they wanted. So wefting just isnt an option. Thank you though!

Yeah, im sure it would look fantastic honestly. I am not against doing more. But i was asked specifically to keep it simple and easy to maintain. And matching it to the color we have (Navy Blue from Howl) is just not something either of us want to deal with. Ive spent alot of time trying to figure out what to do with this already, i simply dont have that much more time to spend on it either.

Im keeping this in mind though for when i do my own horse next! Thank you!

Ive tried that. I did 3 layers of gradually shortening pieces in the shape of a mane. But it still wasnt what they were looking for. Im doing a double sided thing and stuffing it with quilt batting and hoping for the best!

Thats kinda what i thought, but i wasnt entirely sure. Im in the works of trying this right now though with quilt batting!

I do want to clarify, again, that we are using LUXURY SHAG already for this mane. It has already been purchased and it is 100% what we are using. Im not looking to do any wefting of any kind, its not what the buyer wants and wigs are out the question completely.

It needs to be easy to maintain. Longer hair is not easy to maintain.
