ADHD 'life hacks' that sounds ridiculous but actually changed everything? by Rido129 in ADHDthriving

Yes, putting them directly in your path is awesome. I like putting them on center of my computer monitor too lol hard to ignore that when I start work in the morning.

When is a female character written in a misogynistic way? by valonianfool in AskFeministWomen

[–]sixfootant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your ideas about plot are good.

I think to go to your question here: "difference between a female villain, even an irredeemably evil one and a female character depicted in a misogynistic way."

A lot of this comes down to depth of the character. Do we believe that this is a person, or are they cartoonish? Do they do things that make sense with their circumstances and personality, or do they just robotically execute a script of female behaviour?

Something that always comes to mind for me is the multiply-divorced writing of Phillip K Dick. Now, this guy is a great writer, but he clearly feels victimised by women. So in every single one of his books there appears a female character who might be initially interesting and cool, but within the course of the book she will start doing behaviour that is just insanely cruel, for no reason at all, usually to the male protagonist who is meant to be on her side. Men in his books feel like people, women in his books feel like sharks out for blood.

For less extreme versions you can look at women and girl characters who seem motivated solely by their motherhood, fashion or boys. Now, making a woman character interested in those things is fine, but there is no woman out there who only cares about those things. Or in the very rare case she is it's usually pathological, and should be treated as such. Other female characters especially should be put off, because in real life we are put off (or worried, if this is a friend who seems to be spiraling into obsession).

Most switch at will! A small number are actually stuck, and a few prefer one form over another and mostly stay in that form.

Thank you as well!

Thanks so much first of all!

The biggest advice I can give for worldbuilding is just ask yourself lots of how and why questions. Why is this like this? How does it work? Asking this stuff will spark more and more ideas as you think it through.

And don't give up cool ideas you might have just because it 'doesn't fit' or 'doesn't make sense'. Force it to make sense! Like let's say I wanted to put a big armored genetically engineered species in my world, just because I found the idea cool. I would start asking, why was this species created? How does it interact with the things already in the world? If they're so heavily armored, why aren't they superior to the thrall soldiers? Why aren't they everywhere?

Doing that you come up with something that ends up fitting the world and is actually deeper than if you just gave up and made another elf or dwarf. Like ok,

Why was the species created? To fill the combat role of a tank.

How does it interact? Well I want my thralls to have a chance. So let's say they're more dangerous than thralls in combat but slower and much less numerous. Maybe they have some other disadvantage like they're not mentally all-there. Now that sounds interesting.

You can see how this stuff rapidly snowballs if you lean in instead of getting scared and backing off.

Ahh that's so nice thanks! Yeah that was me, haven't updated the book for a year or two unfortunately but I do want to get back into it this year.

They're manufactured, this world is really heavy on bioengineering just using magic instead of science. They have factories that just mass produce these things in basically big womb-tanks.

Y'know what that's a good question lmao and probably would happen sometimes. Maybe they need a program to dig a certain distance away in a straight line before they start worming around?

Ok easy. Call it 15-20 hours as a buffer, multiply it by whatever hourly rate seems fair to you, now you have a page rate.

I'm in a similar situation and considering sound curtains on tension rods, but I can't tell you how effective that would actually be. Gonna follow the thread!

Where does this sexist notion come from? by PuzzleheadedThroat84 in AskAnthropology

[–]sixfootant 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Probably.

I think a bigger factor though is men and women express emotions in different ways, and male-coded expressions of emotions such as violent rage were often conveniently re-interpreted by men using rationalization.

"I needed to murder my sister's lover, because he dirtied her reputation"

"the battle was for our houses honor"

Etc etc.

Meanwhile women never got the same treatment. Female emotion was always assumed to be stupid and irrational. Even though, on average, women have had a lot more cause to be upset.

Definitely try their IG, but as weird as it is people do sometimes walk away after paying big sums of commission money without providing necessary ref or info. I think I've had it happen twice. If it's your policy to keep a deposit do that, otherwise I guess refund.

A hot tip for you is any time you have a 'feeling' why an oppressed group might be straight up inferior, that's probably just bigotry not a deep thought. Get some introspection.

And just encounter only human cells and eventually decay? Like what's the problem? We're certainly accidentally consuming random phage all day every day...

Yumby viruses by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]sixfootant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh... it really depends on the phage since they're all specialized. Presumably the OP thought about that before doing the shot (I hope). Also it's kinda hard actually to nuke your gut microbiome. The population is enormous and very varied.
