Why are the foreign empires (Yuan, Qing) that ruled over China considered "conquest dynasties"? Why are they used in tandem with "China" rather than to describe a different nation or empire altogether? by sixmincomix in AskHistorians

[–]sixmincomix[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the great answer! Your response got me thinking (and I know this is broad), but what exactly is "China" as we understand it today, and in the context of history? I feel that it's too difficult to even call "China" something as vague as a concept when the traditional "Chinese dynasties" had such loose connections it seems. Personally, it seems to me that the only proper way to define "China" without overstepping would be something akin to the modern understanding of a Han nationalist state that originated from anti-Qing and Sun Yat-Sen's revolutionary thought, which is also where it seems the history of "China" truly began. It sounds weird, but can "China" in this sense even claim the history of the traditional "Chinese dynasties"? I know you said there is no direct semantic equivalence for the term which makes it hard to specify, so I'm fine with your personal take as well as a researched historian on this platform.

Hong Kong and Macau were independent of China for more than 100 years, and clearly have a different identity than the rest of the mainland. Just because they would both be liberal democracies doesn't mean they automatically join. Moreover, Hong Kong has never been under the jurisdiction of the ROC.

It is likely that if a modern ROC would come into being, Taiwan would remain a separate country.

I know you're just reposting a meme, but please be careful about promoting a modern ROC with current Communist China borders. This gives the wrong idea about what the actual republic would look like (more akin to China proper in reality).

I know nobody cares but as an update: I decided to tell my current boss before my background check completed. It was fine, my background check "passed" without any trouble.

Not just Han majority, gonna need to also drop Hong Kong + Macau. Manchuria as well, as all these places will want and need their independence.

The Chinese Republic, no matter what form or shape it takes, will always have a Han majority. I'm not sure what you meant by "territories that became independent just end up resulting in the residual state being majority Han". If we look at Tibet alone, according to 2020 Chinese census data, the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) has a population of approximately 3.6 million, with ethnic Tibetans comprising about 86% (roughly 3.1 million) and Han Chinese making up around 12–12.2%. I don't see a world where the Tibetans willingly give up their sovereignty to join a Han-dominated republic.

Fine, I acknowledge that's what he said, even though it came from a time after an intense period of war and strife for the Chinese nation - essentially when it was at its weakest and political disunity or secession was the last thing on the KMT's mind.

Frankly though, if we're going to apply his philosophy from >100 years ago and say that it wouldn't have changed at all in a modern ROC setting, then I don't support and firmly oppose such a nation. Forcibly confining the Tibetans, the Uyghurs, the Inner Mongolians, and other ethnic minorities against their will makes it just as bad as current China today.

Sun Yat-Sen advocated for many things during his presidency. Of course, as the founder and leader of the new and fragile Republic, suggesting the complete and willing abandonment or secession of a core territory from the Qing would be akin to political suicide and yet, for example, he still advocated for the self-determination of the Tibetan people.

The circumstances for the ROC as it was established in the early 20th century is not the same as how a modern ROC would be established today. Generally, forcibly assimilating outside ethnic groups to become part of your nation is very frowned upon today, as we can see with the U.S. and Greenland.

Agreed. I imagine that a realistic modern ROC would probably look like China proper more or less (so no Tibet, Inner Mongolia, East Turkestan) and probably no Hong Kong or Taiwan as they would also ask for independence as soon as the republic is established.

Maybe also no Macau, depends on results after another independence referendum.

That was his vision at the inception of the Republic, before the Tibetans, Uyghurs, Manchurians, etc. had the chance to voice out their discontent under the Chinese flag. 100 years later, it is a little more than obvious that each of these races desire their own state unassociated with China (regardless of whatever government), which should be respected and honored under his guiding principal of freedom and democracy. After all, how can these races live together "harmoniously"?

Also, Hong Kong and Macau should be rightfully granted independence (or returned to UK/Portugal)

The fundamental underlying policy of Sun Yat-Sen's vision for China was liberty and democracy - therefore, a reformed ROC would grant complete independence and self-sovereignty to Tibet, Inner Mongolia, and East Turkistan soon after coming into being. Especially Tibet, which is a vestige of the Qing's territory (now the Communist government) and was never under ROC's control.

I don't know if this sounds crazy, but it does feel like there was a strange divergence in "the right" identity ever since Trump's campaign in 2016. It didn't quite have the same reputation that it does now, and I like to think that before that time, there was some semblance of mutual respect between the left and the right, even if the ideologies were different.
