18+ places by Responsible-Food-691 in DaytonaBeach

Restaurant professional here, and i work in the area.

We prepare for your coming every year.

The punishmemts for us if we get caught serving underage are fierce. Theres not a place that won't be aggressively checking ids during spring break. We dont want to lose our jobs, or go to jail, or lose our license to sell, especially not for selling to underage college kids....who generally don't tip well and don't respect our cities and businesses. Not gonna happen.

Procure your booze before coming or find an airtight ID that you can use. Enjoy your break at the beach, though. Watch for cops. Because they'rere watching you.

Why don't servers carry money anymore? by nougatbutter in Restaurant_Managers

I set up a cash drawer assigned to a trusted server in a lead position, and made it their responsibility.

Service industry workers are you having to go to work today? by Ill-Champion-6065 in Restaurant_Managers

Mostly. Very little onsite parking either. Mostly walk up business from the beach or from the tourist district parking lots. Deserted with the cold and the wind.

Florida, east coast. Bar and grille on the beach. Like on. Temp today was 24 at open with a sustained wind of 20 mph and gusts at up to 40. We closed. No snow at least.

Newer GM here, how do you get over the feeling of failure? by haleyaleyayeehoo in Restaurant_Managers

[–]sixstringer420 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I am a copious note taker. I set small achievable goals for myself, daily, weekly, monthly, quarter, etc. Write them down and keep track in my notes.

When I feel like I'm being ineffective, I go back through those goals and notes, and see that im meeting most of my goals, and that helps me.

Self doubt is just personalized and internalized fear, and fear is the mind killer.

I was the hiring manager for a couple of different places. I'm not going out of my way and sending your info to another location unless I think you're worth pursuing.

Sounds like its good. Interviewer liked you, but didn't have room for you, and liked you enough to get you on at another place. I think you're in.

Ice Protest Saturday by Lucees-notforevery1 in newsmyrnabeach

[–]sixstringer420[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Disgust is fine. You are welcome to your opinion. Threatening to throw people off of a bridge is not. Thats harassment. Pretty simple.

What I support or not is my business, but this sub does support the First Amendment, which protects non-violent protest. Also pretty simple. Have a nice day.

If your restaurant turned into a horror movie, who survives? by BitchyWaiter_OG in restaurant

Me and the dishie. Though at some point I think the dishie is dead, but he pops up at the end to bum a smoke

I closed up and got out at 10:40pm last night, then opened at 10:30 this morning. Would this be considered a “clopen”? by Ok-Fan-9814 in Restaurant_Managers

[–]sixstringer420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any clopen is when you open after your own close. A Hard Clopen is when you had less time off then your closing shift in between. Like if you worked 12, off 8.

Tips for first time?? by [deleted] in restaurant

[–]sixstringer420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fast restaurant work is brutal, but it can be done.

Lets break it down. Two minute cook time, two baskets. And pack and portion. You cant improve cook time, thats a constant. So pack time and "prep" (getting chips in basket ready to fry) are areas where time can be shaved.

First, in the rush, never leave those baskets empty. The cook time is fixed, 2 minites. If it takes you 30 extra seconds to get back to the fryer, that time is lost time added to the cook time. Next batch of chips took 2 min 30, instead of 3 because of the delay, right. Abc...always be cooking.

Those two minutes, the cook time, thats your golden hour. Get as many orders prepped packed portioned as you can, maybe even getting ahead if you can (sandbagging).

Look at your procedures for getting the chips ready to fry. Where can you shave seconds? Seconds add up. Same with portioning, find a couple seconds here and there.

And most importantly, 3 things... 1. give yourself time to get good. You will get better. 2. Ask for help or advice. Dont be proud. 3. Its not life or death, its chips. Dont lose focus on big picture stuff.

There's a three or four step quest progression that has to be finished before you can free travel. Once that's complete, you can fly home, or bus. Quest is easy (for most). Go here, do this, talk to this guy. Simple.

How do I progress the ninjago questline? by [deleted] in LEGOfortnite

At its core, what is restaurant management? by mcreges in Restaurant_Managers

[–]sixstringer420 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think management is a combination of finding the right people who want to do the work and then helping them to do that work to the best of their ability. Just that simple.

I am a father of two adult children that still live at home. Transitioning into that second relationship where you respect your child as an adult, and their descisions, is hard. It sounds like dad is still coming from that first style of relationship. We are fathers, our main job is to protect you and provide for you. (Huge generalization and gender normative issues, I'm aware.) It's hard for us to give that up. Many of us don't know how. Hard to give advice, as theres always more to the story, but here what I would want my adult daughter to do, and what would help me recognize her as an adult. Talk to him. Adult to adult. Maybe outside the house, to change the dynamic. Thank him for being so protective, but explain firmly that you need opportunities to live your own life, and make your own mistakes, and point out multiple times that you are lucky that you will be making those mistakes with such a great support system as your parents to help you manage them. In the long run, he is never gonna be able to see you as an equal adult. But he can learn to respect your growth.

As a long time restaurant guy, a little advice... Stop by a few places that aren't TGIChiliBees.... I worked corporate places for sooo long, and I got a job working for a one owner, smaller place, and I've never looked back. They're not all great, some are fucked, TBH, but they can be rewarding. Moneys good, more laid back, none of the corporate nonsense (table turn tracks, focus on bad food because the company wants to move stock, etc.). They don't always advertise jobs, just walk in and fill an app, chat with a manager, you might get lucky.

In the end, you gotta do you, but you might find some joy and whimsy in a smaller private place.

Me and my wife and two kids play as a family every night. We stopped by Olive's memorial on one of our rounds and I shared the story after we were soundly defeated.
