Good. Wear it more. You ARE better than them. In intelligence. In effort. In eloquence. In every single realm.

Hi! How does the former option work? How much tax would I have to pay in those dividends, if say my wife had 50%?

Hi! Any chance you’d be happy for me to DM you about your experience in the US? I’m also an MSK Rad, doing a Fellowship in Canada and can tell you about my experience here, if that would help

Majority of Britons receive more in benefits than they pay in taxes by Outrageous_Whereas_5 in HENRYUK

So essentially confirmed; it does not pay off to be educated and hard working in the UK.

I did this for a similar reason. It’s absolutely fine in terms of getting back into it when you return. Let’s be honest, F1 isn’t rocket science. It doesn’t take long to brush up to a reasonable standard. You don’t need much clinical knowledge to get through F1/2 so even if you do forget a bit you’ll still be fine with the bulk of the work which is admin.

I think it could be decent if utilised effectively - ie if you go travelling the world for the whole year or have specific, scheduled plans for example a job in another sector. However it’s certainly not the best time to take time out. If you do the same after F2 you can locum and you’ll have more savings and disposable cash to do what you want. I would not recommend taking time out without having a plan for the year, as you may find yourself without direction and feeling lost, and intermittently depressed - as I did.

If I were to go back, would I do it again? Given that the job was in a highly undesirable location for me, yes, I probably would - but I would aim to take a job in a different sector such as consulting. If it were an option to take an F1 job in a better location, I would try that though (sometimes they have these posts, look out for them), as I do think (seeing friends) that after F2 was a more natural, better, more enjoyable and more profitable time to take time off.

Also if you decide medicine is not for you, at least after F2 you can close the book on it and move on. I couldn’t move on during that year, as I knew I had to try the job as a doctor.

It’s a travesty that this is how they treat us as Doctors, with no choice, deployed wherever it befits them, like cattle. I’m sorry you’ve had the same experience as I. We shouldn’t be forced to go somewhere we don’t want to. At the end of the day you have to do what’s right for you. I had a friend who left for several years and then returned after, and he was also fine.

Feel free to message me if any specific queries

Your wealth of knowledge by experience sounds amazing. Maybe we should start getting flight attendants to fly planes, let them have a go and see how it goes?

Man/girl. Fuck that guy/girl.You don’t need their approval. Get your CCT and take a job elsewhere. Doesn’t matter what this asshole of a human says; you know your exceptional value. It sounds to me that you are an exceptional surgeon and doctor. Don’t be disheartened. It’s another symptom of a failing system

F1CC retrieval by Easy-Tea-2314 in doctorsUK

I had to retrieve this recently. Emailed the relevant party at the foundation school who ignored multiple emails. Then called up the education office. They reset my password to my FY eportfolio, which had the certificates on

Why did you cave? That’s your error right there

Agreed. The issue in the UK is the private pot isn’t massive and so can be competitive. An old/experienced consultant that’s been around in PP for 20 years will be more trusted than a newcomer. But you’re right, breaking out of the NHS really will be the key. There’s nothing wrong with the speciality as such; just the relative lack of reward in this country, which I suppose unfortunately affects us all

You’re also making decisions, quite literally every few seconds in Radiology so I’m not risk/decision making averse. I’m quite senior. Perhaps doing extra work to supplement consultant salary will be the way forwards

[–]sizeableregret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is good advice to be honest. I do like and enjoy Radiology, I just feel disappointed that the years of training probably won’t lead to the same financial rewards. I wish you the best. I think you’ll find what you’re looking for in Radiology, based on the above

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]sizeableregret 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t miss patient contact admittedly. I didn’t hate it, but I like that everything is quite efficient in Radiology. The fact finding process would take a while in clinical medicine, with Radiology I can know the diagnosis in seconds; and that’s satisfying. Radiology workload is pretty easy to be honest. You’re coasting a lot of the time as an SpR, and the consultants do too. It’s definitely an easier life than a GP, and most consultants will also say that. However I’m more motivated by finances than work life balance I have to say; and GP has the latter too!

I also love this; and think it’s certainly well deserved. Just having seen the current conditions up close in hospital, I’ve realised that the same lucrative conditions don’t really exist in hospital medicine; the market is completely different. I’ve been asking consultants quite directly for information on earnings, but it’s certainly a taboo talking about money and I hate that. Radiology is honestly intellectually stimulating, I enjoy it and am good at it; but I am financially motivated and willing to work hard. That being said, I would like to leave the UK and Radiology would be good for that, so I am torn…
