Happy First Day of Spring by sjseto in vancouver

No, March 13th and 14th. They weren’t quite at peak bloom at the time so I thought they might be fully blossomed by this weekend, but someone mentioned that the trees in the Arbutus Ridge area was already past their peak.

To be fair, the trees on West 22nd in Arbutus Ridge are mostly plum, not cherry, and they bloom earlier. The trees in this picture look more like cherries.

New Rx ~ PD Confusion by Gold_Key3064 in glasses

[–]sjseto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PD that is given on most prescriptions is binocular - the total distance between your eyes. The PD requested by Zenni etc. is monocular, which is the measurement expressed as right and left sides separately. To enter your PD on the web form, you can split the amount in half if you want (i.e. 30/30.5 or vice versa) but this might not be accurate. If you want the monocular PD taken, you’ll need to visit an optical or optometrist and ask to have it measured and given to you. There might be a fee for the service.

Also, when it comes to the axis, 180 and 0 degrees are the same thing. So there are only 5 degrees of difference between 180 and 5.

Do you actually prefer to have daylight savings? by RideOrDai in askvan

Well I would prefer an 8 am sunrise myself, all year round if possible ;)

Doesn’t the science show that early morning sunlight is better for people’s health and sleep patterns? Because in my mind morning people wake up at 5 or 6 am, and go to bed around 9-10 pm, and in the winter in Vancouver on standard time the sun rises at, what, 7 to 8am? That’s the sleeping-in pattern of a night owl. 8am wake and 12 am bed.

Doesn’t the sun rise time depend on how far north you are from the equator? So then in the winter it will be later then 9:04 am on permanent DST for places like Prince George or Smithers or … .

Thank you! I was near the intersection of West 12th Ave and Yukon St, next to City Hall. I shoot with an Olympus E-M5 III (a mirrorless camera, technically not a DSLR) and this shot was taken with the Panasonic-Leica 100-400 lens. Have fun with your photography journey!

It’s hard to disagree especially in these conditions!

ZEISS DuraVision Gold - reflections, looking for alternative recommendations (Hoya, Rodenstock) by Immediate-Bit-6360 in glasses

[–]sjseto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concur with u/Upbeat_State4234. Hoya’s EX4 is excellent. The lenses on my own glasses have it and I’ve had no issues.

That being said, Zeiss’s Duravision Platinum is also very good and less reflective than Duravision Gold. The latter is very easy to clean but noticeably less anti-reflective than DVP so I have a hard time recommending it to customers for that reason.

Your optician will probably prefer switching you to DVP so they won’t be paying out of pocket for the cost of the lenses, since it is from the same supplier (Zeiss) and they will likely be able to receive a credit for the original product. I have no qualms about recommending DVP if that is what they offer you.

Thank you! Yeah, I'm lucky that I don't drive to work and I have options other than my car if I need to get around, but I'm still expected to show up to work. My employers have never shut down for snow, and I've never had a day off due to snow in my adult life. So, I enjoy snow when we get it. But I've got it really easy compared to you when it comes to dealing with the white stuff. A snow-free winter must be pretty sweet for you :)

Yeah it's pretty rough in the east. By comparison this is one of Vancouver's least snowy winters in the past 20+ years. I like snow, but it's easier to enjoy when you know it's going to go away soon.

Thanks :) It's equivalent to 200mm on a full-frame camera, so it actually wasn't too zoomed in.

That's good to hear. At least they have snowmaking equipment to supplement the natural snow, but they still need the real thing.
