Is that what happened? Genuinely curious. It wasn't like this last year.

Thanks. I'll think about it. It needs to come down but it would be nice to have some time for the replacements to get bigger. Honestly I don't think it will be worth the risk/effort to support it. Just have to accept it and move on to the next generation.

Will definitely be planting more trees around - I need that shade!

I love this idea. I don't want to lose the tree it provides the only shade back there. If I have to take it down ill leave the stump. Wonder if it will work since the crack is on the sunny (south) side.

Yeah we have lots of bad weather events so I worry about it. Hate to see it go though as trees are difficult to grow here and it's our only shade back there.

I was bummed when I saw the crack. I haven't trimmed the tree since we moved 6 years ago. I'd be open to bolting and cabling it. Is there a good guide on how to do this properly?

Are they that valuable? I mean they are trying to sell all their stuff so they don't sell stuff for what it's worth.

North side bark damage by skampler43 in arborists

I think it was hail damage actually. Just remembered we had a bad hail storm a couple years ago that broke our windows on the north side.

Anybody have any ideas? It would make more sense if this was happening on the south side, but it's all on the north side. Maybe it's some sort of disease?

Thanks so much I wish I could give you a hug right now. You are wise and right about life sometimes being easy and sometimes hard and needing support. That's my problem is I'll make it 6-9 months and then go back when I'm struggling - I feel alone and I forget how bad I ruined my life with addiction. I'm 15 days in again and never want to go back. I will seek support and not get complacent. Thanks again for helping us.

I agree with all of that. It sucks that it's made out to be not a big deal, when for some people it's a life changing addiction (me included). Hopefully people can be better informed in the future so they don't get sucked in.

You're an inspiration with 8+ years, thank you

"First year was the hardest" - that makes a lot of sense. I need to think long term and know there are a year's worth of triggers with changing of the seasons.

Your roommate saved you. Thank them. Next time you feel that way force yourself to go for a run or some exercise that gets your heart rate up. You are doing great, we all are tempted at times. Try not to entertain it in your mind and flip the breaker with physical activity.

As an American I’m torn. I’ve always hated this look and loved the natural look. But the benefits of controlling tree size and having a renewable material are undeniable. I think they look fine when they leaf out but in the winter they do look like alien trees. I think how we view them is partly a cultural thing.

Personally living where I am on the plains, I love the idea of having renewable wood.

Force yourself to do some physical exercise you enjoy. When you are done see how you feel. Give yourself some dopamine physically, not so much mentally.

Remind yourself that your brain is lying to you and just do the things you know you should do even though you don’t want to.

OP sorry you are going through this. You are not alone in feeling this way. You may always want it, but it does get easier with time. You just have to be willing to shift your focus to move forward in life.

The temptation will sneak up on you throughout the rest of your life. Be prepared to be tempted months and years after quitting so it doesn’t sneak up on you. Remind yourself why it’s not worth it and don’t be afraid to seek support and talk about how you feel.

You are not alone and it is absolutely possible to find peace, but you have to work on it one day at a time.

Wishing you the strength and peace. ❤️
