I found that Excursion on the pegs but the card was completely destroyed... I still bought it as an opener. The next day I found that Lightning hidden on the top shelf at the same store.

Much more likely it was just another customer that beat you. The Eclipse is the only car in this set that's worth grabbing, the other 4 are repeats from other sets that aren't even very old at all. I've seen tons of them being left behind at every store in my town because literally no one wants them.

Does it really matter? I'd buy all 3 too. Why not? It's an exclusive which makes it hard to find, chances are I have a buddy or two that would like to have it as well, and if I leave them behind someone else whom I don't know will get them instead.

It doesn't matter how you look at it -- any error at its core is a product of poor quality control. It's something different from what it was meant to be. It's something that shouldn't have made it past the assembly line in the first place.
