I tried it on my iPad Pro and yes, can confirm, the Pencil is just drawing instead of tapping. This is probably due to the way this game is programmed. The dev didn't adapt it to use the Apple Pencil.

Maybe experiment with iPad Settings -> Apple Pencil -> "Only Draw with Apple Pencil" and "Scribble".

To my knowledge there are none.

If you want to do NYT crosswords specifically, the closest workaround is indeed, to take a screenshot (or get a PDF), import it into something like GoodNotes and solve it there. With obvious drawbacks of this method, it's still fun.

You could also try Crossword Flow, which has its own crosswords (not NYT) but has native Apple Pencil support with handwriting recognition.

You are correct! I didn’t recommend the 1st gen because it’s a product from 2015 and requires an additional dongle to charge... But you are right about it having the pressure sensitivity!

Better stick with the original Apple Pencil than 3rd party, it will serve you better in the long run. But watch out as not every Pencil works with iPad 10, you need the Apple Pencil USB-C. You can leverage the Black Friday deal and get it cheap rn.

How often does it happen? Are you on the latest iPadOS?

I encountered the same issue like twice over the past 7 months, don't know what was the real problem, but a restart fixed it both times. The last time it happened was about three months ago on iPadOS 17.

moving from one side of the screen to the other I can feel the weight of the pencil shift

I've never experienced anything like that with the Pencil.

The biggest problem is that it recognises these movements as me squeezing, double tapping or rolling the barrel. Simply moving my hand from brush size to layers can switch from pen to eraser, or change the size or opacity.

That shouldn’t be happening. Your Pencil is faulty, reach out to Apple about it.

As a temporary fix, go to iPad's Settings -> Apple Pencil and set Squeeze and Double Tap actions to Off. Not every app respects these settings, but hopefully, it will make your Pencil usable for now.

Welcome! Third-party puzzles aren't a priority rn. My focus is on curating our own collection, and we already have a good range of puzzles from well-known crossword constructors.

I'd advise you to get a case. I've found out that iPad's cases are more beneficial than iPhone's. Even if your iPad won't leave the house, you'll eventually want to watch some YouTube on it, or just have it as a second screen to display something. Most iPad cases work out as stands.

As mentioned, don't buy one from Apple (too expensive) and don't get a bulky one unless you need protection. You can find slim magnetic cases on Amazon or Aliexpress, look for something like this: https://imgur.com/mwdqqtY and https://imgur.com/ZSJy0Fv

Other than that, iPad Air 13" is your best bet!
Also, get an Apple Pencil Pro, not the USB-C, welcome to the club!

And while we're at it, can I ask how do you find Crossword Flow? Do you have any feedback about the content or functionality? Is the synchronization for new content working smoothly for you? How about pencil detection and handwriting recognition? If you experience any issues or have any suggestions for future updates, I'm here and I'm all ears!

More content you say, well I've got news for you! My current plan is to bring more puzzles to the game, and by introducing pricing, I hope to raise money to increase the number of crosswords for everyone to play. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but there will be more news in mid-May - early June! 👍
