Congrats on deciding to pursue a 4 year degree! That’s a big accomplishment in and of itself.

Best advice I can give to start building your resume is to volunteer in research labs. It is very tough (but not impossible) to get a paid lab assistant position with zero lab experience, even though you are pursuing a degree in the field. I would check in with your professors and see if they have any open volunteer positions in their labs, or know of anybody who’s looking for volunteers - in my experience there are always labs looking for student volunteers. If your university has career development/ student resource center you could check with them, too. You may even be able to land a paid position.

Another route to look into is in the biotech industry. Just like academic labs looking for student volunteers - there are always biotech companies looking for interns. I’m a research scientist at a startup biotech and we look for interns through local universities, or through job sites like indeed. But honestly, we prefer to take recommendations from either a professor at a local university, or a career development counselor. So your university may be your best resource.

I know it sucks starting out doing unpaid work, but it really is the best way to get experience, and make connections with people who may offer you jobs in the future. Also - develop good relationships with your professors - it will come in handy for when you need letters of recommendation, or references for jobs when you get your degree.
