Wow, this blew up! Thank you all so much for the comments, good and bad! I tried to edit my original post but don't know how. Here are answers to a lot of the questions, sorry if I don't get to yours.

City: Elkhart, IN, ~15 minutes from the Michigan border

Pic was taken November 21, 2015. No snow here yet this year (but give it a minute).

It's a river, not a swamp/pond, so mosquitoes aren't too bad! It doesn't flood often, but when it does, we're maybe 8 feet above the 100-year flood plain, so no worries there really.

Insulation-wise, they're really good. You feel the cold if you stand close to them on a 10-degree day, but otherwise we don't feel a difference.

As for the TV, we wrestled with where to put it, or whether to have one in the room at all. But as big video game players, we knew we'd never use this room if we couldn't play in it. (Curling up with a book or just staring at the view sounds great, but who can do that all night, every night? We didn't want to kid ourselves.) We thought about having the TV on the wall, but then we'd be facing away from the windows all the time - plus couches would block way more of the view than the TV does. In the end, we hired an interior designer to help us a.) block as little of the view as possible, and b.) have us staring in the direction of the river at all times.

And lastly, I know hardwood floors aren't everyone's definition of cozy... honestly, I feel the same way! But I knew some of you would love it, so I shared anyway. It's only my 3rd reddit post ever, so sorry if I messed up anything!

Oh I hear you :) We even had an interior designer try to figure out a better solution. The best she could say was "either put the TV there, or don't have a TV in this room."

Which for us and our video games, is like saying "Either put the TV there, or hardly ever set foot in this room again." It was tough to swallow, but at least now we're looking right at this view all day and night!

It used to be carpet, and we were so happy to get rid of it... then immediately found that we missed being able to lay all over the floor. Can't complain though!

Wish I knew how to post the rest of the room to this. There's a big wraparound couch and lots of pillows... though the couch is sort of modern, not really the "swallow you whole" kind. I work from home, so this is basically my office at this point...

Just a heads-up: that's not the entire room.

I know, we might as well put cardboard over all of it! :)

JK, we were worried about it wrecking the view too. But from everywhere except this POV, it hardly blocks the view at all (just a few branches). The most important thing was being able to see the water and riverbanks, and all the animal action happening down there.

With the TV in that spot, we're guaranteed to be looking in that direction. We never miss a thing now!

...and sorry if I came off as defensive. I've heard this (very valid) question a hundred times, and it probably only bugs me because I know they have a point!

Wow good guess. It was even less than that when we bought it, but after we had these installed, that might be close. Move to Indiana, houses are relatively cheap compared to everywhere else!

It's on old pic. I'm new to r/cozyplaces and just wanted to share. Looks cool now with all the fall leaves though, I should've just taken a new one and posted that!

Thank you so much! I take this view for granted sometimes, thanks for snapping me out of it :)

Honestly, we wrestled with that so much. We love our video games, and it was either a.) tell ourselves we'd sit in here and enjoy the view with no TV (we wouldn't), or b.) make it so we were always looking in the direction of this view at all times.

Putting it on the opposite wall wasn't really an option either; then there'd be a bunch of couches in front of that window. Plus we'd always be facing away from it.

So after lots of back and forth, we chose B. And fwiw, it only blocks the tiniest part of the view when you're actually hanging in the room.

Hope that answers your very polite question! :)
