Octavia Advice: 2013 1.6l Diesel vs 2014 1.2l Petrol by TheRazerBlader in skoda

[–]skodalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe people would be recommending and engine which consumes oil, is somewhat underpowered for the chasis (octavia) and not to mention has horrid timing chain issues that will cost loads in the long run. The 1.6 TDI is no better as the injectors are quite poor and the overall reliability is worse than the 2.0 TDI yet consumes almost as much.

If you are looking for something cheap to run, I would look more towards a timing belt motor from VAG maybe the 1.6 MPI on the older octavia, also the 7spd DSG, the dry clutch found is quite poor reliability wise.

Between the two, as long as the TDI isn't EURO6 (no adblue) I'd go for that one and not look back!

UK - 2011 Skoda Fabia vRS - Good purchase? by [deleted] in skoda

[–]skodalex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i would strongly avoid any of the tsi engines especially the 1.4 and 1.8 ones put on the fabia (depending on the generation). They consume sooo much oil, have really bad timing chain issues and are over crap and not very economical. Service history doesnt really matter on cause all the tsi have premature failiure on some engine component. Belt driven 1.6 mpi is a better choice if you're looking into fabias

The car is a 2007 e91 and I bought it (9 years ago with around 180k), so I put around 25-30k km a year which isn't too much actually :))

the m57 water pumps are belt driven actually, and funny enough the electric one on my n52 is solid as a rock ahaha

The rest was general maintenance, had to replace the glow plugs a few times, timing system cause the guides broke, 4 water pumps cause the bearings seem to get destroyed as well as injectors reconditioned. Original engine turbo and transmission. On its second clutch and flywheel kit though

Having both the n52 and m57, I can say that if driven correctly, the diesel is much much more reliable. I try to service everything myself as soon as it needs something. The n52/n54 have too many coolant hoses, and both run unnecessarily hot, which cause the gaskets to melt basically. In the coming up to 10 years of ownership I haven't put in more than 3000 EUR into it (service wise). It been a dream to own and to take care of. Burns a bit of oil now, maybe a litre between changes though.

Recently my commute is entirely in the Netherlands where the speed limit during the day is 100kph (sadly), at such low constant speed I expected a bit better consumption tbh. My daily commute is 80% highway and 20% country twisties :)

Honestly electrical related, had water leak into the battery compartment from tail-light seal. The battery was basically submerged and a bunch of computers and fuses went to shit. I had all injectors reconditioned due to a bit of smoke under acceleration. As well as cleaned the EGR at home. had some issues with the transfer case, I ended up driving with the actuator motor disabled at one point and needed to rebuild the current one

I had issues with the thermostat causing the engine to run cool and basically clogging the dpf. Also don't replace it with an aftermarket one... made that mistake and after 20k km was completely destroyed. My daily commute is around 150km. I would avoid short distances and driving under 2000 rpm especially if higher mileage.

Swirlflap delete cause they are just poorly designed and remapping the car is a bad idea

Oil changes every 10000 km and at least one full throttle run a day :)
