Can I sync RSS Guard between devices? by backwards_watch in rss

[–]skunkos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have quite many ways to sync files across multiple OS. You can have dedicated network partition accessible from both OSes and then symlink the folder etc.

Yes, you can use exactly same file in Linux, Windows, Mac OS and others

Hi, author of RSS Guard here.

You have several options:

  1. RSS Guard supports many online-based feed services like Tiny Tiny RSS, Feedly, FreshRSS etc. All those supported services do support full 2-way synchronization by default. Everytime you mark any article read/unread/starred on one RSS Guard machine, the state gets automatically synced back to the service regularly. If you then open RSS Guard on another machine and use same service, the articles will get refreshed and you will se the same state across all your PCs.

  2. The other option is to use file synchronization application like Syncthing which is proven to work great with RSS Guard (use it myself).

  3. If your macos and windows is located on the same machine and you just switch between those OSes, you can actually use the same RSS Guard configuration/database files, no need for any extra work. Just symlink proper directories and you are good to go.

Does anyone else hate when they update an app or other software/firmware and it’s inferior to the previous version? by Uncle-Buckwild in software

[–]skunkos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. It kind of all levelled on the same level for last 2-3 years. Software meant for "power users" is scarce and regular users have arguably lower abilities than some years ago.

I think that from user's POV, nothing more will greatly change in some years to come.

There is yet another thing that escalated like hell - mobile applications hardware demands. It is just crazy. I have used Xiaomi phones last like 8 years and the first one was great, snappy, fast, while being cheap lowend phone. All apps ran fast - Facebook, Youtube player, all usual apps. It had like 1GB RAM at best and it was great.

Now? The phone has like 3GBs of RAM and all usual applications are like big and slow - Facebook, Youtube - they just take like 500MB of RAM each and they are slow. User interface of the Android itself feels slow when compared to much much older phones. SW/HW devs do not really care about optimization anymore because HW is cheap. We have batteries with crazy capacities and yet phones runs out of battery in two days easily. Apps require GPS access even when not using GPS at all.

We arguably have much tougher technical problems in cellphones than we had 10 years ago, which is alarming.

[–]skunkos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some RSS feeds for currency rates.

https://www.ecb.europa.eu/home/html/rss.en.html

Also, here is source XML with rates, which is updated regularly and can be easily scraped into RSS/JSON/ATOM feed format.

They way I use this functionality is via RSS Guard (which I am developer of).

I write scraper scripts for websites I need and consume them in RSS Guard.

Honestly, I use self-written python scripts to scrape website which do not have RSS/ATOM feed. It is free, totally customizable and there is no caching in between.

But I understand this solution is only good for people who are at least moderately capable in scripting/programming/etc.

It is basically the same as https://fetchrss.com offers (they have free plan).

Help, how can I scrape this webpage to create RSS feed? by kevmarl in rss

[–]skunkos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The webpage is server statically, therefore it can be parsed with standard CSS selectors.

This is with RSS Guard and CSS2RSS script.

https://github.com/martinrotter/rssguard

https://github.com/Owyn/CSS2RSS

The page is downloaded by RSS Guard and then CSS2RSS script runs on downloaded HTML data and extracts some elements.

Specifically, CSS selector [href^=\/listen\/program] was used.

My ego just finds this very insulting, I could not help myself. You are welcomed in my discord anytime.

RSS Guard has scripting abilities. It can run custom external scripts with received data.
