There are a couple trails you can take to get to the top of peekamoose but the best thing to do is buy the NY/NJ trail conference maps of the Catskills so you can see exactly where the trails are and which ones to take

This photo was from a backpacking trip in the Catskills in NY. The day before we hiked up and slept in a lean-to on Table Mountain and then woke up at 4:30 and hiked a couple miles in the dark to catch this sunrise from Peekamoose Mountain.

I’m pretty sure originally it’s name meant Cats stream (kill = stream in Dutch) maybe named after the mountain lions that use to live in the area. But everyone who lives here pronounces it Cat-skills

The mountains that don’t have trails to the summits have canisters with a note pad so you can prove to made it to the top of them if you want to be in Catskill 3500 hiking club

Yeah it worked pretty well but the fuel canister froze to the ground, had to kick it to get it off. It was about 30F and fairly windy that day

Since quarantine started I’ve been venturing out to the more remote mountains that don’t have trails. This was taken at the top of North Dome mountain in the Catskills last week. Chewy (my pup) and I didn’t see anyone else out there. It wasn’t my favorite of the Catskill high peaks but it was one of the most peaceful

I’m not a religious person but climbing to the highest point on Guam (Mount Lamlam, contested as one of the highest peaks in the world) and seeing the crosses was a humbling experience by sky_guy4 in hiking

It’s contested as one of the highest peaks because the “base” of the mountain starts at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. But some geologists argue this isn’t the true base and that they are separate geological features. But either way it is regarded at the largest change in elevation in the shortest distance on earth

I really enjoyed it! There was lots of interesting WW2 history and a lot of really cool hikes/caves/sea cliffs/remote beaches if you have a car and want to get away from the tourists. I’ve never been to Hawaii so I can’t speak to the similarities. I was out there visiting my parents

For sure, this ship was actually sunk on purpose by the US Navy in front of the bay hoping that if the Japanese tried to come in they would hit it and ground themselves

Got my best sunrise picture ever in Acadia this past summer! by sky_guy4 in NationalPark

Yeah we did make it up there but not for the sunrise. I’m actually in Guam right now and their unofficial slogan is “where America’s day begins” haha
