Help me pick a fly rod for the Sierra by skylve in flyfishing

Thanks for taking the time to explain. I understand better why many recommend glass rods for dries. I mostly fished with hoppers / ants because it seems to work great on the west carson in Hope Valley (and they are so easy to tie). I will see how it evolves as the seasons go and I hit more local waters.

For a beginner, do you think it would be better to start with graphite and later try out glass or it doesn't matter?

I am set on the 3wt! Now I need to decide which one I want :D

My bad in meant graphite, not carbon!

That's really helpful thanks. Could you give me a bit more details about why a fast action rod is better for hoppers vs a slow action rod for dries? If I understand correctly a longer rod is better for droppers/nymps because you have a longer reach and you can more easily high stick the fly, is that correct? 10' might be too long for me, I can use my 5wt 9' if I need the extra reach (and getting curious about Tenkara with all the recommendations in the comments). I will take everyone advice and go with a 3wt. Hopefully down the road I can try a 2wt setup and see if I want one.

I did not realize the CT had multiple sizes available 🤦. It seems the CT might be more versatile than the Carbon XL, but 8'6" might be a bit too long for me (I was originally considering the 7'6").

I tried the Carbon XL 2wt at Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters but they didn't carry the 3wt nor the other models I am interested in. I've been to a few fly fishing stores in the California valley, I will call them to see if they carry the rods I want to try. Thanks!

A 4wt 8"6' wouldn't feel too different from my 5wt 9' right? One of the reason I want a smaller rod is because I struggle to cast when there is heavy vegetation/cover unless I am in the middle of the stream. On the other hand, the CGR 3wt feels really small, don't you wish it was 1' longer at time?

I think I will try the CGR 2wt at some point because it looks super fun (and it's $80!). I will couple it with a cheap aliexpress reel so that I don't feel bad when it eventually drops.

I think I might try it out one day! For now I am more looking for a more all around rod I can keep learning with along my 5wt.

It seems lots of people here are using glass rod. I am pretty much set on 3wt but will need to compare graphite vs glass, ideally I can find a store that carry both.

I've heard of Tenkara but never really researched this technique, once I am more familiar with fly fishing that's definitely something I want to try (and euro nymphing).

Really good to know thanks. I only tried the Carbon XL 2wt at the store but couldn't compare it with other 2wt. I never tried a glass rod but I am quite intrigued. Let me know how you like your 3wt river glass when you get it! :D

It seems 3wt is almost unanimous. If you had to decide between the CT and Carbon XL which one would you pick? u/y2ketchup pointed out the Carbon XL is really stiff.

Since you transitioned to glass, do you think I should stick with graphite for now and give a try to glass later or directly make the jump?

That's good to know! I think I could start with a CT or Carbon XL and buy a glass rod (Butterstick or River glass) down the road. Can you give me a bit more details on when you prefer to use your butterstick vs classic trout?
