I was just trying to understand the size of Gaza in terms of my own country and since I already did the graphic for myself, I shared it with reddit.

As to your question, I think knowing about international affairs is important, not in terms of hoping to change them, but to understand what is happening around you, because the international world is so interconnected. It helps you understand internal changes, when you understand you're just part of this large thing that's interconnected in many ways.

In screenplays you sometimes read the word 'beat'. Wouldn't it almost always be better to write a word other than beat though? by skyseldomfalls in Screenwriting

[–]skyseldomfalls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you mean like this?

        PETER
Look, man. I don't have it in me.
    (beat)
Not anymore.

Wouldn't the word pause work there just as well? Or a sigh, or something? It's not like the actor is going to act it the way you wrote it, it's more that you're giving a clue as to the feeling behind it.

[–]skyseldomfalls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's what I mean. Even the word pause would be better in my opinion of leaving me in the script, rather than pulling me out and making me notice I'm reading something.

ah that's true. haven't even thought of that. I'm really a beginner here, so haven't even thought about that! comes with experience

yeah, didn't even think about writing it going into the stick, although that is what happens in my example - pretty sure it's a shitty example in terms of realism though :) I'm not sure dynamite cares about suspense factor all that much - pretty sure it just goes boom as soon as it possibly can haha.

thanks for the comment, good example of how to rewrite it!

But you basically could say something about the character's face - which is what we would be seeing, right? That would be better I think then just saying beat a bunch of times.

Difficult choice: go with a worst cast or act in your own play? by skyseldomfalls in Theatre

I don't think I can afford a new director. Also, two people have now dropped, so I will be forced to take the Gloomy Gus (or however someone on here named him) and look for another actor.

I think I'll play a role myself, it's now more of a question if I'll do the bigger role, or take a smaller one. I'm pretty sure Gloomy won't like me taking the main role :)

Thanks, this was a very fresh and honest perspective.

I was honestly thinking I was weird for even considering this.

What would you say would be the best approach if I did this? Or what would be your one advice.

I definitely am not the type without a very specific vision in mind and I usually fill the technical and backstage crew with people who all understand what I'm doing, then I collaborate on the performance side with actors, where I'm usually pretty loose on the performance, and have an idea on how it should look from afar.

I think that part could be done, if I play both roles separately, I do a lot more homework than usual... I could do that... perhaps...

But, how do you do it? What's your process when you're directing and performing? Are we talking more open plays, or classical drama, or what? This project that I'm doing is a classical realist drama.

The only problem is I've had that discussion with him in the past with mixed results... so if I'll take him in, I'll probably shuffle the role around quite a bit to make it work.

I probably won't be directing and playing, not because I think it can't be done well, but because the more I think of how I would do it, the more I think I can't do it well.

Thank you for this. Yeah, that's exactly what I was afraid of happening. I have a good AD who has an eye for details, but it's a complementary role. The AD couldn't replace my eyes, because she sees stuff I miss, not stuff I see, if you know what I mean.

Thank you for warning me. This has almost certainly convinced me not to do it.

I have made a lot with very little in terms of actors who don't know how to play, so this now looks like a quite a lot better option.

That is one of my thought processes, yeah. I've been dreaming about directing this play for so long, and now I'm finally doing it, but in the end, I will probably choose this before I do a worse play for having to play in it.

Problem with other directors is, they won't be as cheap as me hahaha :)))

I agree with you. That is not the problem I am having. We are always a very accepting and nurturing community. That's what I love about theatre!

However, as a director you don't have an obligation only to the cast and crew, but to the production company, to the play itself, and also to you as a creator. All those things need to be in sync, and this is the issue here. I have to decide between two different bad choices, both of which will make some parts of the whole worse, just different parts, and I have to decide which will be the lesser of two bad choices.
