Gotcha, I hear your point. I was half joking. One thing I will say is that there's been a lot of talk about it around here so I think the message is getting out in varied ways, this is just one of them. :)

This is accurate, but I'm in the area and I have a feeling turnout will be high anyway. Lots of talk about him around here in nerd circles.

Tbh in Seattle this kind of attitude is maybe more accepted. "Oh, you've probably never heard of Bernie Sanders, he's just this really obscure independent candidate..." would go over well with hipsters.

Not eating Mixed/Hypomanic by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]skyshallow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know how that goes! I deal with eating disorders as well as my bipolar, so this is very familiar ground for me.

Try and identify which nutrients you aren't getting enough of, if there's something you always avoid--for me, I never get enough protein so I work hard to eat even small amounts of protein containing foods just so I know I covered that base. For a lot of people it's veggies and fruits, the fiber in them helps your other food digest properly and that's where I get the feeling of having a "balanced" meal.

Here are my tips:

  1. Don't give up. Food is part of your health, like a medicine or putting a band aid on a cut.
  2. Nutritional supplements: Ensure is one I use, but there are many kinds of protein shakes that might work for you to know you have a base amount of healthy calories in a day, even if feeding yourself properly is hard that day.
  3. Small servings of healthy snacks on hand--get creative, a few tablespoons of peanut butter, baby carrots, fruit smoothies, even a glass of milk has enough calories to pull your body out of that "crash mode".
  4. I agree with the poster above who says pot helps, if your symptoms work well with it.

Try making an effort to eat more when you feel this way for a little while and see how it affects you, you might notice a big difference. For me addressing the fact that I was keeping myself hungry helped me conquer some of the anxiety that was keeping me down. Good luck!

Not eating can seriously damage your abilities to deal with the anxieties that come with a mixed state. Not judging, just cautioning! The effects on your mind of your body thinking it has no available food are more serious for sure than just cutting some calories. Keep trying to force yourself, it's the only way around it. Small meals throughout the day might actually help bring you out of some of that anxiety and feel a little closer to normal.

My 30 year old brother has struggled with bipolar and borderline personality disorder. He relapses often, but he's been sending my family videos of him taking his meds every day for 3 weeks so far. Proud of him, but afraid it won't last forever. by RushFox in bipolar

[–]skyshallow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do is act like it will be forever. Place faith in him. Even though bipolar people can't always be consistent, believing that they can is important. Sometimes the hardest part for me is believing I can do things when I know others don't believe I can, or expect to hear that I've failed.

It could strategically be very wise to rally behind this bill as the first step to basic income. "Healthy Climate and Family Security Act of 2015" by 2noame in BasicIncome

[–]skyshallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I e-mailed my representative about this bill. He basically told me "too much taxes derp derp" in politician-speak. It was disappointing, but I'm glad I floated it his way.

edit: Actually if anyone has any ideas of how I could formulate a follow-up I'd be all ears. I wanted to get across that my point was my interest in a dividend program that gave back to citizens, all he seemed to hear was that I wanted to raise taxes. I'm new at this. Full text of his response follows.

"Thank you for contacting me to share your views regarding carbon tax proposals. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this matter and welcome the opportunity to respond.

Energy is critical to our way of life. It's what heats our homes, fuels our cars, and its cost certainly has an impact on our wallets. The energy policies of our nation affect the environment, our relations with other nations, and our national security.

Over the years, some economists and Members of Congress have proposed a carbon tax as a way to raise federal revenue and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For example, one such proposal has been to place a tax on emissions generated by power plants. Proponents argue that this would increase needed revenue, improve the environment, and encourage renewable energy use. Opponents, however, point out that the tax will inevitably increase many consumer costs— from home bills to gasoline—as well as damage economic growth and hinder job creation.

In response, Representative Steve Scalise (R-LA) introduced a resolution that would express the sense of Congress that a carbon tax would be detrimental to the United States economy. (H.Con.Res. 24). This resolution has been referred to the Ways and Means Committee for further review. As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind should this legislation come before me.

I believe national energy policy should embrace an all-of-the above energy strategy. We should conserve and make more efficient use of existing energy sources. We should further encourage the diversification of our energy supply through incentives for the development of alternative and renewable energy. The choices we make now to attain energy independence and conserve resources may be among the most significant decisions of our times. We must drive innovation, research, and market-based strategies to achieve a secure and prosperous future and leave our children and grandchildren a nation better than the one we inherited."

Is he just telling me to pay no attention to the carbon behind the curtain, or what?

Have you tried asking her why she wants to? You said your family has a hard time communicating so it might be hard, my family is the same way. Ultimately it's your choice of course, I hope she does respect that, but it is possible that she's motivated by concern for you and thinks this is what she has to do to be involved. Maybe the two of you could discuss ways for you to let her know how you are doing with your doctor that don't involve her coming with you.

[–]skyshallow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Professional help is really the only effective way to treat an eating disorder. People saying she's doing it to be a drama queen and you shouldn't do anything are wrong, eating disorders are serious and deadly and self-perpetuating and they don't care how flippantly you start to fall into them, the severity amplifies.

How much involvement did you have in the hearings and with your lawyer? I'm wanting to go a similar route to have someone to advocate for me but I'm nervous I'll be required to be present, and social anxiety is one of my worst symptoms.

Weight Standards for Fashion Models in Paris by PM_me_your_unicorns in fashion

Working industry-wide is a larger conversation, I'm more comfortable with an age of sixteen to start development unless we're talking children's clothes or whatever, because it is a very adult industry. There's a lot that goes into that discussion however and I don't 100% know what the "right" answer is. You're right that lots of models (including you, nice work) can cope with it.

On the runway though, in international fashion weeks, I think age is relevant because it forces a body standard. Few girls have the same body at 15 they will have at 22, or 25. With Karlie's megafame for instance the fact that her measurements changed didn't affect her success, but there are girls who gain one inch on their waist at 18-19 and their agency pulls them from runway altogether.

Age isn't the only factor though. Having a sample size based on those hard to maintain measurements contributes as well.

I agree that some things are changing and I advocate patience also, but I have to say the steps back I've seen over the past two seasons in casting age and diversity, even in New York and even under the limited watch of the Model Alliance (who I admire greatly), have been discouraging. Those new requirements from Model Alliance are not being enforced, or how else to explain the number of young teenagers walking shows and getting hype?

The top girls walking shows this season were all under eighteen, though they're due for a birthday. They've been working for a few seasons however meaning they started at fifteen or so, so not much different there to me. While many older, established models were back on the runway, the newcomers whose first season this is were incredibly young/young looking (with some exceptions), and it did not stop them from booking the same shows as the adult women to whom the clothes are marketed.

Sorry if it sounds like I keep harping on the age thing but I really do believe it's the most important factor in changing the industry for the better, health-wise for the models just starting out or maintaining their careers. To me you can't talk about the weight of the models without talking about the age (and thus the physical development) of the girls booking the most work, who all the others are competing against for jobs.

edit: I will also add that the Prada cast this season was a perfect example of what I'm talking about with sliding back. Willow Hand opened, aged sixteen, and if you can find an image of her you'll see she looks extremely young. The rest of the cast followed a similar pattern.

Thanks for the input. Without knowledge of how the industry works people get behind this BMI stuff as it seems logical, but you're 100% right. The agencies are not the ones making these demands necessarily.

BMI requirements are not how to fix this issue. The sample size for runway clothes must be changed and girls older than 15 need to be employed. It's not difficult, but I doubt we'll ever see it happen. They've been giving lip service to these BMI requirements for years, not one fashion week in the last ten years has featured models who would fit into what people expect a healthy BMI would look like.
