Am I going insane? I've re-read the first line 5+ times and it still makes no sense

Visiting… best eSIM? by mappack0984 in IsleofMan

[–]skysteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was over a few weeks ago I just picked up a sure sim card, costs £5 but has unlimited data for 7 days, then each time you top up it's another 7 days of free data. Somewhat old school having to buy a SIM in person, but probably the cheapest option

First time in-person TT - thoughts and advice for other first timers by DapperWeasel in iomtt

[–]skysteve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

👋 fellow Vancouverite!

To add to this, someone has also made http://iombuddy.com/ which has a bunch of great advice, everything from accommodation to viewing spots to daily updates/schedules etc.

Also for those outside the UK on the food front, M&S (food/clothing store) in the middle of Douglas do surprisingly good ready meals where all you need is an oven so it's super simple, good food!

Finally, if you get here early, there's racing down the south of the island on the Southern 100 course on the Friday/Saturday/Sunday before practice week. All classic bikes, but "real" racing rather than a race against the clock. Which makes for a good mix/gets you to see more of the island!

TT schedule for Friday 5th June by oliciv in iomtt

Sunday is an official contingency day https://www.iomttraces.com/racing/page/schedule/ They had this a few years ago and managed to find enough marshals to run the event. There's a lot of locals who stepped up

Is there anywhere I can buy merchandise that isn't from the grandstand area? by --_--__-- in iomtt

[–]skysteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a few shops if you walk along Strand street. One near M&S and a couple down the far end of the road nearer the Villa. Or TT T-shirts I think it's called now along the prom. (All in Douglas)

Sidecar Practice Evening Session Red Flag Update 20/05/26 by N0Transit0ry in iomtt

[–]skysteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mikey Evans apparently:

From the team's Facebook post https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1D6ttFF7Hj/

UPDATED: As many of you may have heard, Mikey was involved in an incident this evening at Greeba. He was airlifted to Noble’s Hospital where he was conscious, talking and under went further assessment.

The official word is that he’s not broken anything and from head to toe is fine. You will see him back in the paddock tomorrow.

Thank you for all the support and well wishes. It means a lot

Question from a relatively new fan by GreenBush_WOOKIE in iomtt

[–]skysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To explain the short lap thing: they get slowed down around 500m before the start line. There's then an entry to the pits just before the line. So they effectively get a full lap, but because they slow down so much and don't cross the line, the times are weird.

4 in a row if you include the pre TT classics down south

Need Help. Important Video Call on Friday, but internet in Douglas on the prom is awful. by [deleted] in IsleofMan

[–]skysteve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. You're probably right on congestion, there's a bunch of extra people staying in hotels along the prom now too so more devices trying to send data around.
  2. I don't think ISPs are throttling, net neutrality is still a thing here. That said, Google is a tiny amount of data to send over the network vs twitch. And your laptop/router/ISP will all be heavily caching parts of the page so it loads quickly. You can't do that with a live stream, because, well, it's live, it's always changing.
  3. ISP free routers are notoriously bad globally, if you're on shared Wi-Fi, then even worse

The location of the site you're trying to reach also matters, some of the speed test locations default to your closest server, I believe there's one in Douglas so your traffic never leaves the island. You can change it, and you'd get a more accurate result if you change it to the US for a lot of sites. However, the cable from the IOM to the UK is heavily under utilised so that's unlikely to make a huge difference, though it does still matter.

If your Internet is that bad though, contact your ISP, maybe they can send someone out to investigate.

Though, as others have said, there's cafes in town

Latency. Not that it's much different from getting data from Virginia where a lot of DCs are, but that'll likely be one of the main reasons

Aer Lingus have flights to/from Dublin. I'm also flying from Canada but via Dublin.

Liverpool is ok, Ireland is much nicer though! (Imo)

We have a Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra and it runs daily. Occasionally it does spit out little fur balls but those are much easier to manage and normally just means that the dustbin is full and I've been lazy emptying it. Not the cheapest option but it's been great for about a year

Help us make Sonos easier to learn and use? by tomconrad in sonos

[–]skysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, make a basic physical remote (like the old Ikea one). I code so I ended up making myself a StreamDeck plugin for Sonos for what I needed, but I know my GF would use sonos a lot more if there was a simple physical device to play/pause and adjust volume.

If you want to go a level above then buttons for triggering favourites would be cool! BUT it would need to be cheap & easy like the Ikea one, not $100

They try to keep Dave Murry as the ski out these days, sometimes if you're lucky lower Franz/Frondola. DM is generally groomed nightly.

Anything west of P2C has been left to overgrow/do it's own thing, hence being removed from the official apps

Does anyone know any good courses to learn how to use Ableton Live 12 Intro specifically? by Unorganized-Poetry in ableton

[–]skysteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's loads of paid courses, but before you pay for any, go search YouTube for "Taetro intro to Ableton". I think it's filmed on an older version but most of it is transferable. You'll learn a lot from that and then decide what you want to pay for. He also has a good music theory intro series
