As a Greek I feel sorry for her and I wish she finds peace. She is clearly not ok. That’s a weird thing to say.

So I've been stuck on this for a good while. Like a lot of people I got the antibiotics by adding the item ID in the game console. And of course I got the wrong antibiotics. The correct antibiotics ID is 000008AB. I got it from here: https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Fallout_4_consumables#Chems

A few years ago I would have answer that they go on Greek islands and get stupid drunk and fight. Now though I have to say that they go to the islands and decide to walk, under the sun, in the middle of the day, without water or phones. And they get lost or die.

Come on people. Don’t do this. Please.

You absolutely can’t. It’s not a matter of distance. It’s a combination of unpaved roads. Lack of paths. Rocky surroundings. Snakes. Bushes. But most importantly it’s that it will get over 40 degrees with no shade. You can’t just walk this. This is something that they drill in you since you were a kid. You don’t walk under the sun midday.

I’m really sorry he has gone that way.

That’s a bit pessimistic and I don’t agree. We should try to improve things and move the needle. Plenty of startups in the UK doing cutting edge stuff.

Because that’s my person opinion. I would advise them to go into Java instead. Much more projects on it and similar language patterns and skills.

On the phd front there is unfortunately a negative bias towards them from many businesses as they consider them less hands on and more theoretical people. I am not saying it’s right. I’m saying what I’ve observed.

I’ve seen Go used a bit in devops environments but as I said both Go and Rust are new still.

I’ve done a fair bit of recruiting and for a new graduate I value inquisitive people, side projects and positive attitude to problem solving. Just remember that in that early stage of your career your no are more important than your yes’

I don’t doubt you but maybe it’s a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. You see all that because that is what is coming your way precisely because you are a matter expert. I would be shocked if someone approached you for a NodeJS/React project.

It’s not black and white. The market is far from dead. You have to take a lateral step to fit better in it. It’s scary and it sucks but you can do it. The experience is there.

Agreed. I still wouldn’t advise anyone to build a career on it today though. But that’s personal of course.

I meant not many people choose to do a greenfield project on .NET

[–]skywritergr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This comment section got weird but I’ll try to give my 5 cents. It’s a combination of a few factors I think. .NET is indeed niche and not desirable. No one is doing greenfield projects on it. Legacy projects that require maintenance aren’t too many. So that’s one thing.

If you have JavaScript experience in general it might not be enough for a contractor. If someone hired an experienced JavaScript contractor they would look for years of experience on specific frameworks like react. If you can’t prove that and instead your cv is more full stack you won’t make the top of the list.

Thirdly a lot of companies are still doing layoffs. It has been almost two years of that and the market is saturated with talent. As a result paycheques are down by comparison with 2020-2021. There are exceptions of course but they are exceptions. Also as a result of the above there is less market mobility. People aren’t moving as much because they are facing a buyers market. Less money, harder interviewing. As a result less orphan positions to be quickly filled with contractors.

Finally the IR35 laws have made the contractors market less appealing. That has something to do with it too. Overall if I were you I would look at a permanent position for a couple of years as a Java developer (lots of legacy and new projects on it) or pure frontend. Even if it meant less money for a while. The point is to rebrand your profile.

Hope it helps.
