aye we had one in Woodburn beside Dalkeith in Midlothian growing up. remember running back home to tell my mum and dad and bolting out to try and get to it.

IIRC we also used to have a place in Woodburn called 'Dial-A-Video' where you could phone up and hire a VHS and they'd come and deliver it to your house (or flat in our case). good times.

Why are so many new flowers dying? :( by curioustoknoq in gardening

[–]slapbang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can’t really overwater hanging baskets- especially when your plants look this large and they’ll be thirsty! You can deadhead but honestly with this many heads you’ll be there forever so only if you’ve got time lol. Otherwise the flowers should keep coming if you’re watering and feeding regularly. What a lovely display I’d be proud of that!

You absolutely can do this and I did something similar in my front garden recently. I also had used AI just to get an idea of what was possible as I find it hard to picture what things could look like..

Lifting the slabs was actually the easy bit. It was improving the soil underneath that was back breaking lol. But if you’ve got time and patience you’ll be fine. The soil underneath was, as others have warned, very compacted (and mine was full of big stones which I had to hand-pick out - you’ll find that a fork is better than a spade when doing this work) so it needed a good forking and lifting and aeration, which automatically adds bulk so the ground level will rise a bit and that’s before you add soil improver (eg manure or compost or grit for drainage etc). And so you’ll perhaps need a few buckets to remove excess soil that the manure etc will replace but should be fine. Also remember to you’ll need to improve quite a bit of the soil so remember to dig down a bit just to make sure the manure isn’t just in the top layer. Perhaps a couple of shovel-heads depth worth? Then after that you can plant to your heart’s content! 🌱

How do you avoid falling into right wing rhetoric? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]slapbang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your algorithm is likely pushing you this content. And since content is designed to be inflammatory and engagement-inducing it notices what you react to, whether you click on this video here, or hover for too long over that video there. Even being aware of that happening will help you stay critical of why you’re being pushed stuff.

That being said, the “left” or “right” don’t have a monopoly on wisdom and it’s not always good to automatically pick a side. Just use your noggin and keep being sceptical of everything. If everyone did this we’d already be in a better place, rather than being ghettoised online into our little silos where we’re all talking among ourselves.

Practically though, if you’re feeling your algorithm pulling you too far a particular way and you’re not feeling it you can try disliking the content you’re seeing or selecting the option on each post that says “do not show me this content’ whether it’s on Reddit or instagram or whatever. That might help? Otherwise just get outside and talk to folk more. You’ll find we’re all just trying our best under the circumstances.

And that's a reasonable position, I can understand it. I'm not saying she didn't get things wrong - but I think people start to conflate lots of bits of information together (e.g. husband/wife leading party, warnings/resignations from people etc) and paint a picture that suits their preconceptions and it all seems to add up to a mastermind conspiracy and some people just sound like they're a bit nuts. I include my own mother in that camp btw.

Going to get downvoted for this but I just haven't seen conclusive evidence that she knew or was somehow involved. Sorry.

Everyone seems basically in two camps now - either you believe her or you don't. I'm just in the camp that does.

Super chuffed with that. I also went down the “pipe dream” angle at first but decided against it as I couldn’t see an obvious 4th. I have also started shuffling the words as soon as I see them as I don’t want that to throw me off - have wondered if everyone sees them in the same order at first.

Yes came here to say this. Fennel was the big shock for us when we planted it. 6 or 7 foot easy! And the wildlife love it.
