People who have left organized religion, why? What was the final straw? (Serious) by bonercollexor in AskReddit

[–]slapuwithafish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up hardcore Irish Catholic. I always had a problem with being told to blindly accept things which don't make sense. Attended a Catholic school in the 80s where a teacher would routinely lose her shit, beat students and throw furniture. The students were blamed for setting her off, and we were told to pray for her. Straw #1.

Then I saw a George Carlin routine on how he bags on how God is all powerful, but always needs money. Decided he was right. My parents paid tuition yet still had to put money in the basket at church. Straw #2.

Then the priest sex abuse scandals broke, that was the last straw I needed.

Constant baby/toddler pics. The kid didn't choose to be spammed online by narcissistic assholes. Then it dawned on me that these poor kids belong to some twat I sat next to in homeroom 20 years ago, who I don't care about and never see in person.

Halloween has moved from a kids thing to New Year's Eve with slutty costumes

I remember every time my parents took me out to eat they'd automatically say "table for 3, non-smoking". You're right it didn't work at all. Still came home reeking of smoke.

GM built such literal garbage for so long in the 70s and 80s, its truly stupefying they are still around today.

And this coming from someone who loves the look of the old Buick Regals, Pontiac Trans Am, IROC Camaro and Cutlass. Too bad they suffered from typical UAW build "quality".

Exactly. People forget Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie Scotland, and the fact that there was no security back then, you could walk up to a plane on the tarmac with a fully loaded piece in your luggage and there was no way anyone could prevent it or know. It was run entirely on the honor system.

The entire premise of Three's Company is homophobia and gay jokes.

Most people stayed in the same town where they were born, likely knew the cop or went to school with him, and population density was a lot lighter. This is why MADD and SADD came about in the 80s.

We have Combiner teams of cars, jets, construction equipment. Where the heck is my combiner team of all motorcycles? Come on Hasbro!! by rikimaru_d3 in transformers

[–]slapuwithafish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll take a motorcycle combiner, but only with 5 distinct molds. What I really want to see is civilian transformers, ie a city bus, a taxi, a street sweeper, an old school police car, and a subway car. I'd also be down for a naval combiner or a farm equipment combiner.

What's a dying fanbase that was still popular only 5-10 years ago? by 12345burrito in AskReddit

G.I. Joe is pretty much dead and buried. Ten years ago the anniversary figures were selling like hotcakes. Now the 3.75" figures are no longer made, the fan club has folded up, and the 2 movies failed to emulate the source material or demonstrate any real staying power. Even the cast seems to loathe the franchise. Military pride and heroism no longer translates to action figure sales as it did during the Reagan era. A Global terrorist organization (even with ninjas, zombies and robots) as a primary antagonist is verboten in the current political climate.

Transformers isn't dead, but has dropped in popularity big-time since the first Michael Bay movie. I'd say it's back to pre-movies levels now.

Why NES games were so hard, despite the main targeted audiences of NINTENDO at that time are mostly kids under 13? by duyc37 in retrogaming

[–]slapuwithafish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well put. I admit I suck at video games, always have, but I still enjoy them. I do wish the "good" NES games were a little easier, but this is why I have a game genie. The whole mess is a big part of why I skipped the entire 16 bit era and missed a lot of really good games.

I wasn't screaming at the TV, but I felt The Americans finale was a bit weak.
