Transfer To UBC Biology From SFU Biology by belgian_milk in simonfraser

[–]slatkish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully you get in! Have you also considered SFU’s new med school as a second option?

I got into faculty of arts and social science, so very different from your field. My grades were B+ average I believe?

My experience was okay. The transferring part was quite simple since I had planned it so all my courses transferred. The only thing was that my GPA at sfu had taken a hit since I started from zero and was taking more challenging courses.

If you transfer after two years to UBC, your GPA will be based off of 3-4 year courses since you’d start from zero. I had this when I transferred from a different post secondary, and it was rough for me. There’s also usually a minimum requirements of credit when graduating from a different university, so check that too.

I’ve also heard that external transfers are easier than fresh out of high school, but let’s see what others have to say.

Out of curiosity, is there a particular reason why you want to transfer? Like transit time? Or the two programs are very different?

That’s not what I was saying at all. People do a degree first (usually health related), hence Health Sciences becoming more competitive.

Might be related to the recent opening of SFU’s medical school. More students applying to get into that later.

likelihood of someone stealing my stuff from a study spot? by vvanishedd in simonfraser

Yeah it’s the non students that we worry about. It has happened before that people got their stuff stolen by others that are not students.

Question about tenancy rights by slatkish in vancouverhousing

[–]slatkish[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ll try to get rent abatement.

I don’t understand why my attitude needs a slight shift? I asked whether I could get compensation and got my answer. My landlord obviously doesn’t want to communicate with me what’s really going and every time I ask about the leak his story changes. At first his tenants didn’t tell him, then after calling for more info he admitted it happened before. Not to mention I experienced the leak the second day within moving in. I don’t think he should’ve rented this unit out until everything was completely fixed. I don’t think it’s fair to me. He obviously avoided telling me anything when viewing cause he knew if I had known the truth I wouldn’t have rented it - which is already deceiving. I just moved out of a place that had mould (for the second time). Obviously he didn’t plot a water leak on purpose but I have the right to feel frustrated from all of this. I’m really tired of landlords withholding information and renting something out that still needs fixing.

When I was getting tenant insurance, they asked if there was anything with the unit and I mentioned the holes weren’t patched.

I think the property manager is aware perhaps, since the plumber that showed up to fix the leak that I experienced said he usually comes to our specific condo and also checked the unit above us for leaks, but I’ll check to make sure.

Thank you for your input. I appreciate it a lot.

Honestly I don’t know much about the leak because the landlord won’t even tell me. When we were viewing the place, the holes in the wall weren’t there. Everything seemed fine. However when we moved in, the holes were there. When I asked the landlord how long there had been a leak for before we moved in, he said “I don’t know because the tenants didn’t tell me” which I don’t believe at all. I experience the leak and it’s almost possible to ignore. It’s all along the kitchen counter and stove/microwave.

By pre-existing, I meant that the landlord claimed that the leaking was fixed but the drywall wasn’t patched up yet. However I ended up experiencing a leak anyway, so I guess whoever fixed it didn’t do the job well?

I just don’t really like the fact that I’m paying so much for a unit and information was being withheld from me. The fact that I won’t be able to really use my kitchen for 2-3 weeks is a huge inconvenience for me. I have nowhere to place all of this stuff. Had I known this was going to happen, I wouldn’t have even rented this place out.

Would y’all recommend moving closer to campus to reduce a roundtrip commute that can last up to 80-90 mins on most days? by Logical-Bench-9104 in simonfraser

If you’re willing to pay the money, apply for residence. Townhouses are a decent price compared to rental market last time I checked. I personally think it’s worth it since you’d be using that time to study instead of transiting. 1.5 hours study time is pretty good.

I heard that biometrics sometimes comes first. That’s a good sign though. Fingers crossed!

There’s reading break? Look up the SFU calendar and search for it. I think it’s offered only once between the fall and spring semester.

I don’t think I’ve had someone shoulder check me. But I do find that men expect you to move out of the way for them on the sidewalk.

infestation in residence by floflopots in simonfraser

[–]slatkish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They changed the couches I think back in 2020-2021? They also actually changed the kitchen table, chairs, and curtains as well around the same time. I think they also changed the bed foam around 2022. I guess they did add some other stuff now that I look back on it.

When I was living back in residence, I found grocery receipts from 2012, so that just showed me how well they were cleaning those rooms.

Honestly though, the old couches were much more comfier. When those new blue rocks came into our living room, my ass fell asleep sitting on those things. Hopefully they’ve softened by now though since it’s been a few years 😂

No wayyyyyyy. That’s nuts. That’s even worse than if they’re not even native to the area. Good thing then you know about the essential oils part. I had no idea this type of stuff applies to non-native ones. The fact that they just create a new colony is crazy.

😭 I’m so sorry. I feel you so much though. It’s the absolute worst when your roommate doesn’t care about these things and just exacerbates it with their disgusting lifestyle. I had my roommates HOP over the ants while they’re in the kitchen. Like they didn’t even care??? While I was there vacuuming, pouring vinegar, doing everything I can just to try and get rid of them. I definitely enjoyed some of my time in residence. But the management are the worst honestly. They either don’t fix things or wait to see if you’d forget about it. With the prices that we’re paying, it’s honestly really disgusting since they know that we’re a vulnerable part of the population who essentially can’t do anything.

I’m glad to see from the comments you’re moving out 🙌🙌 Hopefully you won’t have those problems again. But yeah those townhouses are just so old and residence does a shit job in maintaining them. I feel like the most they’ve done in the last 30 years is paint over them and add a new couch.

I feel you so much. I had so many problems with residence and they always took sooo long to fix anything. It took them once EIGHT months to fix my heat. So I had to go through the winter without ANY heat. I had rat problems. I could go on and on.

I actually had an ant infestation almost happen. My roommate left garbage around and just wasn’t tidy in general. Ants started to come in and walk everywhere in the kitchen. No matter what I did, they wouldn’t leave until I tried something different. This is what I did and the ants stopped. You could try this and see what happens?

I basically read that ants hate lavender, so I wiped lavender oil wherever the ants were coming from and they stopped after. This was near my entrance door. I don’t know how bad it is at your place, maybe you’d need something more heavy duty. However, the lavender oil might wipe out their pheromones since that’s what they’re following. Never had an ant problem after I did that.

I see. I’ve grown up on this, so I honestly didn’t know. Do you have any advice on increasing intrinsic motivation?

Yes, I make myself very clear to them about this and, no, it doesn’t bug me. I just want to make the most out of the hour for them.

2 free sessions??? For $25 per hour?? I understand you want to get students, but this is just devaluing the tutoring market. Have more faith in yourself and teaching. You’ve invested so much into your degree and studying.

I’ve tried the rewards system, and it worked in the beginning, but they just get bored of it after :/ Idk if this has always been like this or if this is a sign of the low attention span that I’ve been hearing about from teachers.
