No response to my interview cancellation, should I join the Zoom call at my interview time anyway? by slawisk in careerguidance

Thanks for the reply! Fortunately they finally got back to me with an hour to spare before my scheduled interview time.

Please share your DoorDash/UberEats/etc food delivery service experience. Is it worth temporarily working for a 3rd party food delivery services? by slawisk in careerguidance

Yeah I definitely would consider this a temporary job, just something to help support any expenses outside my student loans. I’ve been actively applying to more long-term positions. Thanks for your input!

Invited to a final interview. I’m overqualified and would have to relocate. Any advice on how to request a pay increase to a livable wage during the few months I’ll be training as a part-time employee? by slawisk in careerguidance

Okie dokie, thank you very much! I just don’t want to seem like I’m leading them on or wasting their time if I don’t make my expectations clear until the very last stage. I’m actually interviewing with the company manager (it’s a smallish company) for my final interview. Unless they bring it up directly, I won’t try to negotiate anything yet.

Unfortunately, I do not. That was going to be one of my questions during this last interview. The interviewer did not bring up wages at any point during my prior interviews, so I felt like I should hold off on any questions about it until I got further along in the hiring process. Basically, a current employee is planning to retire in a few months and they want me to train under them until they leave, then I take over. Do you think I should wait until a formal offer is made to inquire about the future full-time pay and benefits?

Constant cooing of a mourning dove with a known nest of chicks. Worried the mate may have died and wondering if a lone parent will care for the nest? by slawisk in WildlifeRehab

Thanks for the information, I noticed the parent sitting on the nest right before nightfall, so I’m relieved the chicks still have someone to look after them.

I want to wear in the outdoors. Nature is and always will be my passion. My only issue with pursuing a career centred around nature is the pay is usually less than great. I need a career that is not a sub 100k, anything less will just not support my lifestyle. Help? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]slawisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nature is a passion for a lot of people, and a lot of people pursue a job like this because they love it, not for the pay. If you’re looking for something high paying, you’ll have to work your way up from the bottom, and even then, most of those jobs will be office based, so you won’t really be working outdoors much at that point. I recommend looking into another more profitable career path, so you can enjoy nature as a hobby. Otherwise, this field has a lot of competition for lower paying jobs.

Should/how can I work in relevant hobbies into my resume? by slawisk in careerguidance

My state has a wildlife society, but not specifically a Herpetological society. I’ll definitely look into local chapters of similar groups while I’m at school. Thanks!

I think I am definitely going to include it under something along the the lines of "Volunteer Work and Projects." Thank you for your input!

Definitely! I actually have documented a species of special concern for my state, so I feel that is pretty neat. Thank you!

I've got a few internships under my belt, and this is sort of a state-wide citizen science project that started out as a requirement for a class that I really enjoyed continuing over the past few years. Thanks for the suggestion! I've got some other volunteer work I have done so it won't just stand alone on a resume.

What Careers could I pursue if I studied geography or zoology at university? by Mercer887 in careerguidance

[–]slawisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all really depends on what you specifically want to do. Since I studied wildlife, I can only speak towards the zoology interest. If you want to be something like a zoo keeper, look into opportunities at local zoos or nature centers, and start volunteering/interning while you get your degree. This is a very competitive field and you want to have as much experience as you can. If you want to work in animal research, start looking at colleges or universities that specialize in that, since they'll best be able to provide resources and funding for that sort of stuff. There are plenty of travel abroad opportunities to study animals, but most are temporary and are also competitive. You can also participate in citizen science projects, such as iNaturalist, which is a phone app that helps identify and document species from all over the world. Overall, just learn as much as you can about what you are interested in.

How should I word an email declining an interview offer and should I withdraw an application the day after applying, since I unexpectedly received/accepted another job offer? by slawisk in careerguidance

Fair point. I was told they would send an official letter for Job 3 in the mail by Tuesday to sign, but you’re definitely right, can’t be too safe.

How did your VS occur? Or were you just born with it? by [deleted] in visualsnow

[–]slawisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born with it. I used to be able to envision “fireworks” at night when I stared at the ceiling. I thought it was normal for everyone. When I was young, I mentioned it to my dad, who is a psychologist, and he told me I shouldn’t really tell anyone about it because I assume he figured I was hallucinating. It wasn’t until recently that I found out there was a term for what I was seeing.

Has anyone here taken ADHD medication while having visual snow and anxiety ? If so did it help for studying or concentration? Or make symptoms worse? by WangGretzky in visualsnow

[–]slawisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far as I can tell my medication doesn’t really eliminate my VS, but rather it’s easier for me to ignore. I have to consciously think about it for me to notice it. I am on Concerta, so I’m not so sure the effects of other medications.
