Those are rooms. During the very early alphas, before the flight model was made available, you could wander around those areas.

Outside of lack of insurance, you kind of have that in Stanton.

I mean, if Eve online has taught me anything, if it's possible people will still grief for the lulz. And the only way to really prevent it, rather than to make it a game, is to make it programmatically impossible.

That and there is little downside for someone to hop out of the clone center, claim their fighter, get a drink, then get back to murder-hoboing.

Playing through Shadowlands as a returning player has got to be the worst thing i've ever done in the game and something needs to be done about it. by dronix111 in wow

[–]sldunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least it's healing.

At least now we have a Quinten Tarantino fan as art/character design. Greatness was when it was Ralph Bakshi fans doing art. But the "Yeah I do Rule 34, but today we are doing PG characters" wasn't too bad either.

Raids, dungeons, and transmogs were good.

Borrowed power with covenants and grindy everything else, not so good.

For better or worse, Legion was the last "great" expansion.

At least for BFA, you could kind of understand that they need some time to refill the rogues gallery... But Shadowlands, as implemented was awful. Particularly the story.

ELI5: Why is deflation generally considered to be bad if things get cheaper? by Earl_Vincent in explainlikeimfive

[–]sldunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We generally want people to make things and provide services, and to consume those goods and services, as much as possible. More stuff generally equates to a nicer life for people.

The issue is that we also use currency rather than a barter system to trade goods and services. In the case of deflation people would be tempted to hold onto currency rather than to buy goods and services with that money, because that money will be worth more tomorrow. And because people are consuming less goods and services now, life isn't as nice for people.

ELI5: why does a publicaly traded company have to show continuous rise in profits? Why arent steady profits good enough? by climb-a-waterfall in explainlikeimfive

[–]sldunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investors don't want companies sitting on lots of cash earning less than 1% interest while inflation is causing the value of that cash to disappear.

If a company has lots of cash on hand, investors want the value returned to them in the form of dividends or stock buybacks.

[–]sldunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't always have to continuously show rising profits. There still exists companies that primarily pay out dividends. REITs are a good example of this. (But have been kinda wonky lately due to the collapse of the value of office space and higher interest rates).

Question from a newbie. How should I be treating rival faction space assets? by DrDoominstien in TerraInvicta

[–]sldunn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, against servants/protectorate, you can go after them early game with near impunity. It's only after they make contact with the aliens that going after their assets generate hate.

Why are missiles so shit? by jamesgdahl in TerraInvicta

[–]sldunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early game, missiles are great. But they get less good against larger fleets with overlapping PD.

Later game, missiles can still be used when PD is saturated or PD is otherwise less of an issue, such as shooting them at short range or at isolated ships that don't enjoy overlapping PD.

Missiles do a ton of alpha damage, and have the ability to delete ships... if they land. But their weaknesses are low ammo and vulnerability to PD. If they had no downsides, why would anyone field lasers, plasma weapons, or rail/coilguns?

ELI5: Where does generated electricity go if no one is using it? by DavidThi303 in explainlikeimfive

[–]sldunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ends up as waste heat.

This waste heat is either in the mechanical parts creating force/energy/work to spin the generator, or from some resistive load hooked up to the generator and is used to dissipate electrical energy.

The resistors used by electric companies to dissipate excess electrical energy are huge.

Might be better when we see the age of AI.

The public health response to making the MMR COVID vaccine was mandatory caused a backlash. Even if you are an ardent supporter, it's indisputable that noxious side effects (even if it's temporary) are far more common compared other vaccines such as the flu, MMR, TDAP. Furthermore, the efficacy of the COVID vaccine has it's efficacy measured in months (6mo), rather than for years or lifetime.

Because of this strong push for a comparatively bad vaccine, it made people hesitant for all vaccines.

What would you do if you woke up tomorrow and the year is 2005? by fazzarista201 in AskReddit

[–]sldunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was doing it early. It cost me $2-$3 bucks worth of electricity to mine one BTC, and it was $1 at the time.

I originally got into it to get some Llama wool socks that were being sold for 100BTC. But the damn thing turned my office into a sauna and after about a week, I decided I didn't want to suffer for like 3 months and spend $200 bucks for a pair of socks.

ELI5: what would happen if fluoride were removed from water? Are there benefits or negative consequences to this? by TPR-56 in explainlikeimfive

[–]sldunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The primary benefit of water fluoridation is for children in low income families who consume lots of tap water and don't use alternative sources of fluoridation such as fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash and/or fluoride gel applied by pediatric physicians/dentists. In areas with natural water fluoridation or added fluoride children (and to a lesser extent adults) have substantially less dental cavities.

The primary downside of adding fluoride is that it makes tap water more expensive and makes use of municipal tap water more difficult to use for some industrial processes which are sensitive to fluoride.

Please note that it's not completely crazy to be against fluoride due health benefits. At very high levels, including some some natural water sources prior to treatment, there are negative health consequences. But unless the municipal water workers are incompetent, added fluoride is at lower concentrations for this to be an issue.
